characters like sally and Sonia have responsibilities, people to lead but the freedom fighters themselves (Sonic and his still canon friends) are still physically fighting but have been glossing over the area they’ve already cleared badniks from to drive eggman out elsewhere, leaving many to fend for themselves until the unknown issues is finally brought to their attention, just because you stopped the threat doesn’t mean all well.
