Ultraverse Trinity

Share

The Ultraverse incarnations of the Justice League Trinity! Not quite redesigns as much as they are my idealized versions of these character's appearances.

Batman is based most heavily on his New 52 design, which was originally designed by Jim Lee, and finalized by Cully Hamner. It's seen in Scott Snyder's run on Batman, drawn by Greg Capullo. I love that incarnation to death, and homage it pretty heavily here while removing a lot of the admittedly excessive panel lines the New 52 was known for. I also gave Batman his black trunks back, his torso feels bare and naked without them. His belt is inspired by his appearance in the DCAU. He's the most tactical looking but I strived to have him still look like the stealthy ninja/detective/superhero he should be. The boots and gloves, basically lifted directly from Lee's design, have recessed louver-like shapes that start on the underside and run to the front, suggesting some flexibility. He's not locked in like ski boots would be, but he still gets the same sturdy protection.

There's a lot of ire directed towards the New 52 in fandom circles, and even as someone who grew up with it and thus has a special attachment to it, not all of that hate is unjustified. Still, there's no denying that a whole lot of good came from it, too: Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo gave us one of the best Batman stories ever with the Court of Owls.

But that's for another time. For now, on to Superman!

I deliberately didn't draw from Superman's New 52 costume because I absolutely loathe that design. Excessively panel-lined on a character who doesn't need armor, drab, dark, muted colors and no red trunks. Basically the polar opposite of what Superman should look like. For shame!

So instead, Superman is more or less a basic evergreen design here. Popping reds, brighter blue, yellow belt, and the required red trunks. Not an original Superman design, but a Superman design that looks and feels like the character should.

Finally, we have Diana. Long-time followers will be familiar with my love for this character, particularly her New 52 incarnation, written by Brian Azzarello and drawn beautifully by Cliff Chiang. I talked about it in more detail here, but in short my ideal Wonder Woman design is Chiang's wearing the costume from the DCAU. Clark may be taller than Bruce by an inch, but I've always thought Diana should be the tallest of the three. She is an Amazonian, after all. As a classmate of mine remarked "Diana can get it."

I had a really great time working on this piece, I'd love to hear what you think of it. Be sure to leave feedback down below! Special thanks to @Palindronev2 and @citalopram-overdose for their input!

HeartisttheArtist responds:

I do plan to someday, thank *you* for enjoying my art!

Tall Diana is peak Diana, and nothing can change my mind.

HeartisttheArtist responds:

Damn right she is!

Damn, Diana is ready to SMASH! XD
Batman and Supes are really nice and detailed (I really like Clark's cape) I personally find Diana's legs a little too "chunky" but I can see, thanks to your description, why you made them that way.
Man, Capullo will always have a place in my heart for Spawn, damn how cool it was!

HeartisttheArtist responds:

I’m so honored that you like them, I’m truly honored! I definitely went a little overboard with Diana, especially her legs, but I’m really glad that you can understand why I made them the way I did.

Capullo definitely helped make Spawn a one-of-a-kind experience, and when you see his art on Batman you can see how he applied his knowledge of heavy shadows and huge, flowing capes. He’s an inspiration!

Perfect art and designs.🙂❤️👏

HeartisttheArtist responds:

Thanks so much, dude! I really appreciate it!

Perfect!
I see you like large women, huh?
man of culture

HeartisttheArtist responds:

Thank you so much! You’re damn right I do.
