I use an application called "style2paint" (is currently down i think, is a web application). Basically paint a drawing that you put automatically based on certain parameters and preferences, certain images work better than others, and can also add a light source and shadows automatically, and the colors of your choice.

I used the line drawing that i did first, the program painted it, then i retouched everything. The application doesn't do it at a professional level of course, but the work it does with light and shadows is very interesting, i use that thing.
