My recreation of "The Great Wave Off Kanagawa" is based upon the theme of natural things versus manmade technology. The canoes and boats in the original are replaced with a yacht and motorboat, plus small tech items are integrated throughout. I intended to demonstrate that while technology and modern living has evolved greatly over time, I still believe that it is all inferior compared to the capabilities and strength of nature. We have our fancy and expensive boats, cell phones, computers and earphones, yet they are not as important and significant as we think. The wave and mountain depicted is towering over all of the technology, signifying that they still remain powerful, even after all of these years and evolution of mankind. It shows that while we can create all of these cool inventions, that does not mean we can control everything. Humans are ultimately weak in comparison to the force of nature. All of the technology I incorporated looks very small in comparison to all of the nature, thus signifying that all of our technology is actually minor. It also shows a contrast between new things and timeless things. While technology comes and goes, most aspects of nature will persist. Finally, not only does recreating the artwork in black and white demonstrate my personal art style, but it shows the contrast between good and evil. White is commonly known as the colour of good and decency, while black is the colour of evil and wickedness. This relates to technology, as it can be viewed in a very positive way or a very negative way. Technology has many upsides and benefits, yet is also the cause of many prominent issues in our lives.
