They weren't human, and so had no way to solve human problems. So now here they wander, looking for a solution they can't find, to a person who can never be put back together.

"The abnormality consists of giant wooden dolls that seem to be attached to string, there isn't a consistent count to how many there are, since more seem to appear when the one in the chamber escapes. They are in search of a solution to their creators problems."

<Story from "Ballad of the storyteller" from an unknown author>

The storyteller had many issues, ones that he wish he could solve. But he was human, and humans cannot solve their issues as easily as characters could. So he had an idea, he would put pieces of himself in the characters he made, and would have them solve his problems! Then he would gut them and put himself back together after they've been solved.

So that's what he did, he made wooden dolls, and then he thought about a problem he had.

"I'm far too nervous."

And then he chopped off a piece of his pinky. And stuck it inside the wooden doll. Then he would go and act out a story involving a very nervous man in a very scary world.

And the most wonderful thing? It worked! He didn't feel as nervous as before, so he kept doing it.

"I don't want to be as sad" A piece of his ring finger.

"I want to be strong!" A piece of his ear.

Soon though, the effects started to be less effective, and the problems kept stacking more and more.

"This isn't working as it use to... Maybe I need bigger pieces?"

But the wooden dolls already had trouble holding his prior offerings, so he had to make bigger ones, and during that process. The final idea came to him.

"What if I were to split myself into giant wooden dolls? I would be human no more! I could have my problems solved with ease! And when it's all said and done they can put me back together."

So he built giant wooden dolls, and with a little help from a wandering wizard, he allowed the dolls to move on their own.

And then he split himself up one final time, one doll would get his legs, another would get his arms, and the main one would hold his head and torso.

And off the dolls went, in search of the solution to his problems. But they had a problem, they had no story, there was no script and the problems they held were too much for a simple character.

They weren't human, and so had no way to solve human problems. So now here they wander, looking for a solution they can't find, to a person who can never be put back together.
