Edit: Here‘s a slightly improved version:

(At least I hope that it‘s better now)

So this is my entry for Jazzas competition with the theme isolation.

It is inspired by the twenty one pilots song Glowing eyes, specifically „I know there‘s someone at the door, they called for help of this I‘m shure, but do I want to say goodbye, to all the glowing eyes?“.

The person in the picture isolates himself so he could be alone with his mental problems, here seen as the little demon in his hand. The blue (and colder) light is the only thing the person knows so the warm redish light coming from outside where the helping person is only seems like something dangerous that destroys and interrupts the familiar blue light. Since the person on the inside doesn‘t realize how much better the warm light is he blocks it out and tells the helping person to leave him alone.

I hope this explanation makes sense, I‘m quite exausted from painting all week so it might be just all nonsense.

This is the first time I entered an art competition (I thought about entering the cotm a few times but never was good or fast enough) and I hope I didn‘t accidentally break any rules. Despite it being really exhausting (especially since Jazza decided to host this exactly now when all my exams are, thanks for that :) ) it was really fun and made me draw a picture inspired by my favorite song.

I think I did the right thing here, spending 15-16 hours painting a picture for an art competition I‘m probably not going to win instead of studying.

Feel free to tell me what I did wrong and how to improve. I might accidentally get a bit defensive after working on it for so long but please don‘t let that stop you, I appreciate every advice.

Now I‘ve got only one question: Why did you read all of this?

So to answer your question... I checked out the work of a kind person who commented under my piece, and it turned out that I have already seen it yesterday, lazily reading half way through the description and I felt guilty ;) Jokes aside, it turned out for good because now I noticed the hand knocking the door and it all made more sense. Oh and I listened to the song.

...and if you say you like some unsolicited critique, I'll do my best :D
I think that the first thing that stands out is the bird-eye perspective, which adds to the feeling of isolation/solitude. The concept of warm vs. cold light resonates with me, but in my personal opinion the difference might have been a little more pronounced? The patches of light on the wall are quite faint, and the glow on boy's face rather tiny when seen in this size on an image. Maybe if you would sacrifice some subtelty the concept would be more readily-readable (I cannot guarantee this word exists, though)?

Anyways, I liked it and good luck :)

Ekkrugg responds:

Thanks for the feedback and everything!
I actually realized the light was a bit weak and not really visible enough when before I uploaded this and used some adjustment-curves to bring out the two light sources. The only problem was that it made some sloppy mistakes I mad in the end extremely vidible so I just thought it would be fine.
I am currently working on it and I just hope it'll work out. As you suggested I also added a bit more light on the face which really makes it a bit better. Obviously the face overall is quite small so it probably will always be kind of hard to make it really visible. I really should've thought more about the readability.

So... What I wanted to say with this overly long reply is, your feedback fas extremely helpful, thank you for that. If you've got any other advice feel free to share it. :)

Anyways, good luck to you too and have a nice life I guess.
