Happy Valentine's Day! ^v^
I thought I'd shake things up a bit this Valentine's Day with fanart from a forgotten, less-than-perfect game franchise.
The Myth Makers games, developed by Data Design Interactive, are notorious to say the least. Infamous for not only being unpolished and lacking in any real story (basically just plopping the player right into platformer levels), but also re-skins of each other and previous games by the company.
That being said, I do think there was untapped potential here. The character designs (by artist Mike Rooker) are very cute and charming, and they were actually given well-defined personalities described by in-game text and promotional art. In addition to overall polish, the games could've benefited a bigger emphasis on story, with cutscenes or at least dialogue of the characters interacting. For instance, Orbs of Doom's box art hints at such a story that isn't really explored in the actual game itself. This franchise could've been a hit with its target audience, but alas, it was doomed to poor reception, only remembered for how shoddily made all of its games wound up being.
Well here I am years later, using some of its characters to celebrate the love holiday. So, there's a plus in there somewhere, right?
