Quick little history lesson:

In 1987, a couple of pranksters in Chicago decided to pull of a broadcast signal intrusion on WGN-TV at a 9:00pm news cast. During coverage of the Chicago Bears the signal intrusion began by the video getting cut out and you see a guy wearing the Max Headroom mask just bobbing side to side with a metal sheet in the background, mimicking the Max Headroom did whenever that was on the air. After about 20 seconds WGN-TV got back on the air. Don Roan, the sports broadcaster at the time and the rest of the team wasn't sure what was going on so they ended up switching the signal to the station's frequency for the signal linking. Later that night around 11:20pm on WTTW for the local PBS station playing Dr. Who around that time the same pranksters hijacked the signal and it lasted longer than the last time they managed to pull it off earlier that night.

To this day no one actually figured out who was behind it since no one claimed responsibility and to this day it remains unknown who pulled it off. The statue of limitations passed in 1992 five years later as per legality reasons. Many theories came out by the time they ended up doing this, but surprisingly it caught on to the imaginations of several people who learned about it years later.

If you ask me far as I am concerned this was high level trolling before "trolling" even was defined.
