Spyro - the TV Show

Share

As I’m deactivating my DA account real soon, I’m gonna be migrating a lot of my art here, starting with my hypothetical Spyro show!

After Spyro 1 proved to be a hit on the PS1 in 1998, DIC Entertainment, who had previously aired ”The Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog” and “The Super Mario Bros Super Show”, reached out to Insomniac to acquire the rights to create a new cartoon based on Spyro. And so, the first Spyro cartoon was aired from 1999 to 2001. Through seasons one til two, ratings were peaked, as everyone loved seeing the little purple dragon and his adventures. However, during the next two seasons, ratings would begin to decline. This was likely due to the “cute but radical mascot” trend phasing out in the 2000s.

As a result, DIC - having squeezed Spyro dry at this point - stopped the fifth season midway and sold the rights to Tremblay Bros, the creators of “Swat Kats”, who would years later air the Legend of Spyro tie in cartoon, which ran for two years, gathering a cult following. However, it would be abruptly stopped with the announcement of Skylanders, leaving the show on a cliffhanger, much to the dismay of the fans. In an attempt to please the fans, Tremblay Bros (under supervision from Activision) created the third and final season of “The Legend of Spyro”, being based mostly on the third game, Dawn of the Dragon, whilst incorporating elements of Skylanders as well. This last season was panned by fans, who disliked the new writing style, new characters, and unusual amount of fart jokes. This was the final nail in the coffin for many fans, and thus, Spyro never got a tv show again..
