Here are some character sketches for Graveyard Shift! Pretty much all the characters were previously seen in my other Halloween animation "House of Boos," just slightly redesigned.
I really enjoyed revisiting the three trick-or-treaters and pushing their designs more. This time around I made them a little older and a bit more seasoned as candy hunters. Like any trick-or-treater worth their salt, they're #1 priority is retrieving as much candy as humanly possible.
As for the ghosts, they're a bit more plump than House of Boos and they're shoulders (arms?) are a lot more simplified this time around. I like the look of the floating ghost arms, but it can sometimes become a hassle figuring out how it should "bend" and stuff like that (i.e. the shot where Greg leans his head on his hand while reading the script).
Greg's uniform (or lack-there-of) was bit of a challenge for me as well. I needed him to wear something to signify that he's some kind of employee and that he is a different ghost than Kevin. I figured making them different colors would solve the latter problem, but as for Greg's uniform I just decided to give him some kind of hat. I have no idea what kind of hat its supposed to be. To be honest, I'm not even sure if theme park employees actually wear hats like that, but I feel like it LOOKS like something you'd see them wear. That's how I'm going to justify it!
I also considered giving Greg a nametag, but it would have been too hard to track something that detailed and might look too distracting pinned to his... er... skin...?
All in all, I really liked featuring the three kids again! I definitely want to include them in more Halloween animations in the future. I feel like I'm slowly figuring out each of their personalities as opposed to how they seemed to function as one unit in House of Boos.
I'll be posting a bunch of other viz dev stuff so keep your eyes peeled!
