Wimalia is named after the Chinook word for the Columbia River, Wimahl.

Wimalia was founded in 1846 after the people in Oregon Country/Columbia District decided that they hated both the United States and Great Britain. Soon after, they invaded northern California because why not, if America's doing it too. Eventually, they also bought some of Alaska, becuase Russia didn't want it. During this period, Wimalia had many immigrants because it just existed to be a libertarian's dream country for the first few years.

In 1911, Wimalia bought some of German New Guinea so that they could pretend to be a major country that colonized. This was fortunate for the New Guineans, because soon after, the rest of German New Guinea was invaded. This was also very unfprtunate for them, because Wimalia's way to ensure control over New Guinea was to commit genocide, meaning that parts of New Guinea are completely white.

In 1977, New Guinea had a referendum on joining Papua New Guinea, but narrowly voted against it.

In 1994, Wimalia decided to make Chinookan, the former native lingua franca, an official language, as it had been dying out, but they felt the need to bring it back. Today, roughly 10% speak Chinookan semi-fluently.

In Wimalia, English, Chinookan, and Cantonese are commonly spoken.
