Amenhotep III

Share

This is my portrait of the Egyptian Pharaoh Amenhotep III (c. 1386-1353 BC), father of the “heretic” Pharaoh Akhenaten and grandfather of Tutankhamun. He oversaw the construction of over 250 structures in his domain, including the luxorious Malkata palace complex in the city of Waset (or Thebes) where modern Luxor stands. He was also a prolific huntsman, led one military campaign against Kushite rebels, and a busy diplomat whose correspondences with foreign rulers have been preserved in numerous clay tablets found at the site of Amarna. Despite the relative prosperity of his reign, Amenhotep’s mummy shows he had put on quite a bit of excess weight and suffered from arthritis and dental problems, so he would have died a rather sickly man.
