Nyaméama Okese

Share

Near the southeastern edge of the Asaase Is kingdom is a hallowed area known as the Maame Nnua, a verdant grove said to be where the Earthmother first walked upon the world and her most favored sanctum. As the deeply spiritual people of the nation hold the goddess Urainshurng (known as Asase Ya in their pantheon) in great reverence, they have dedicated an elite sect of warrior-priests and magicians to safeguard the land, known as the Nnuaɔwɛmfo. Among their exclusive numbers is a 35-year-old human by the name of Nyaméama.

Stoic, loyal and blessed with an indomitable will, Ekow Nyaméama Okese was surprisingly a rather sickly and frail child. The second-born son of an impoverished cocoa farmer, Kojo Píèsíe, and an herbalist, Araba Afiríyie, he was born prematurely due to complications during the delivery of their first child, Kobina Kumi, and was nearly lost to them. To their great relief he stubbornly clung to life and pulled through, and the small family lived a number of years in a small village north of the Awiadɛm Sare called Oyo. Those times were considered rather unfortunate for the family, as a string of long droughts and harsh rains wrecked havoc on the Okese's cocoa crops and herbs, coupled with the other village children shunning and often outright bullying the youngest son for his shyness and frailty, often leading to violent squabbles as the elder fought to protect him, which accomplished little but attracting more trouble.

As Nyaméama grew older, he began to comprehend what his family was going through better, and grew angry at how unfair it all seemed, to the point where he vowed to fix it. From then on he began to throw himself into whatever he could to improve himself academically and physically: running all manner of errands and chores throughout the village; spending nights on end studying in the village archives, including what little magics the town had on record; fighting back against his bullies despite getting beaten down more often than not; no matter how the others belittled and mocked his efforts he continued to work himself ragged. And slowly but surely the young boy grew, to the point his tormentors began to respect him, and then actually fear him as he simply wouldn't stop. On his 19th year the young man was akin to a small mountain, daunting and unyielding. It was then that he began to have a vivid and recurring dream of an uncertain shade flitting through a forest of jade.

Shortly afterward news of a kingdom-wide manhunt reached the village: a thief had stolen off with the Stool of Bobowissi, a holy relic said to be carved from the first tree in the Maame Nnua as a gift from Asase Ya to her lthunder-wielding brother. Seeing the dream as a sign and knowing the reward would set his family for life, Nyaméama vowed to be the one to bring the criminal in, despite his father's protests, and followed his gut feeling to the Tano jungle across the desert. There he found the thief, which turned out to be a sansanbosam, a wicked and powerful devil with wings and red-fur. Despite lacking any formal training and being completely unprepared for facing a high-level demon known to slaughter even a small squad of soldiers with ease, the young man succeeded in felling the devil at the cost of his left ear, and reclaimed the stolen treasure. Such a feat garnered the interest of the Nnuaɔwɛmfo, who immediately approached Nyaméama and offered him an invitation to join their ranks. Such a thing floored the young man and his family, as it was considered to be among the highest of honors in the nation, more so than the favor the ruling king. Knowing the fortune and honor his family would receive, the once-frail boy accepted the offer on the spot.

In combat, Nyaméama is like stalwart juggernaut, a somewhat slow but unstoppable advance able to endure an almost obscene amount of punishment while dishing out his own in the form of debilitating hammer blows, fisticuffs and spear thrusts. Most of his magic repertoire is focused on shielding himself and his charges with defensive enchantments while bombarding his opponents with earthen spires and boulders, or as an extra layer of armor or bludgeoning weight. Given enough time, preparation and concentration he can even alter the very terrain around him to hamstring his enemies.
