Yoshi

Share

Here is my digital illustration of one of my favorite video game characters, Yoshi, the Green Dinosaur from Mario.

He's just a lovable chartreuse reptile! As a kid, I would always choose Yoshi as a character in the Mario Spinoffs like Mario Kart and Mario Party. Same thing with Bowser's Minions like King Boo and Dry Bones.

I especially love the SNES Yoshi's Island game. Even though I didn't own an SNES, I played it religiously on the Nintendo Switch Online SNES pack. It was challenging but very fun. I would turn down the volume or rewind the game on the Switch so that way I won't hear Baby Mario crying whenever I got hit by an obstacle or an enemy. However, I enjoyed the music composed by Koji Kondo and the art style of the game is beautiful. It really reminds me of a kid's crayon drawing or an oil pastel artwork. I also love the use of analogous colors for the lighting and the shading.

I used that as the inspiration of this Yoshi illustration. Same thing with an old commercial from 1990 of a Yoshi egg stacking game on the NES and Gameboy. Instead of Yoshi saying his name with a coo, he just simply says "Meep!" I just it was hilarious and added that into the illustration. I've gotten a little help from an Instagram cartoonist named Sprinkle Monster and she makes awesome marker and Procreate illustrations of Yoshi. She was also a storyboard artist of the new Looney Tunes shorts on HBO Max.
