The Majora’s Mask title screen was made using a screenshot from the original game, brought into CSP and turned into a xerox-like halftone, and printed out and glued to the paper. The leaves in the foreground were done similarly. The leaves were inked on a separate piece of paper, cut out with an X-acto knife, and glued to the paper in layers. In CSP, a sort of depth of focus effect was created by using a chunky screentone and extending it past the outlines.

The idea for this art was inspired by my friend Maia, who created a design for a tattoo of the Mask of Majora with an N64 controller and then said, “Omg that’s such a good idea for a piece tho. Like the little masked kid with a controller just like chilling on a stump.” I felt inspired enough by that to make it into a full piece of art. It took from November 18th to the 20th.

I’m interested in using traditional screentones in my art rather than using CSP. But the thing is traditional screentones can only be imported from Japan and while they are pretty cheap the shipping costs make it expensive. Given that you’ll need lots of screentones to nearly cover an entire 14.5x10” page of comic panels, you can imagine that it’s gonna get costly. However, I really don’t like making digital art; I prefer working on everything traditionally in a very WYSIWYG kind of way. The only digital work I want to do is scanning and formatting.

I bought two smaller screentones to try out and see if I like them! I hope it goes well :)
