Brain Matter 3

Share

(2021)

I was in a rough patch mentally when I started making this. I was trying to force myself to work on it a few times. I had even considered the idea of leaving some of it as a black silhouette, but I felt that was more self doubt talking and not really an artistic choice. (I haven’t ruled out trying that idea with a future Brain Matter piece, though. But I would much rather do it when self-doubt and lack of motivation isn't clawing at me.) But I simultaneously went easy on myself that this doesn’t have to have any strict order to it. I mean, that’s the whole shtick. The more random it is - the more questions it generates from the viewer - the better.

Absolutely love this! There are many takes on "brain monsters" that people have done in the past but this one really stands out. Its asymmetry really makes it feel unatural, spooky, jarring and just generally scary. The tips/ends having a gradient to blue from red is very cool and feels like transitions to deoxygenated blood in certain places. The placement of the eye and the strand making a rough mouth shape makes a perfect glaring face. With the two arms, it feels kinda cool that it has different types of endings (lobster claw and bird talons). Almost as if it has special powers to just modify its cells to grow into different endings since it's a big brain thing lol. Amazing work, love it very much keep it up!!
