Reviews for "Bear 'n' Burd"

As someone who doesn't play platformers nor retro games much, this game kept me playing over and over upon my first try. Firstly collecting everything, and later trying to plow through as fast as possible... I finally understand the appeal of speed-running - since it came naturally - and the greatness of simplicity.
Really fine controls and feel, and just generally enjoyable gameplay - yesss! Also, the sounds are great and I enjoy the lack of music, totally fits. I find myself making little beats on the ladders. The instant respawn with no waiting screen made it easy to keep trying, while the act of dying later on pushes you to rush the early levels to make it back. This definitely seems to help you attain a "mastery" of the controls and levels, and whew, it feels good!
I love it!

i love this

this shits cool

The game's pretty nice! Obviously hard, since it's based on games from the ZX Spectrum, but still very fun! I really love the option to have infinite lives too, makes it more forgiving. I don't get what the "Saving" option is though, all it does (from what I know) is pressing "Pause" when pressing a button that's not assigned. I don't see any differences between "2 Button Mode" and normal either, but that's probably just me.

I did encounter a crash at Hailfire Peaks though, an ice ball hit me, but I tried to dodge it to the right, but when I respawned I scrolled to the previous screen, and then the screen went all black... I don't get why it crashed there...

PennyRigate responds:

Thanks for the review! Much like a lot of the options in the game the checkboxes for saving and the two button mode are best left off if you want a 100% authentic spectrum experience. When unchecked the saving box disables the saving of high scores and keybinds and the two button mode allows for the x button to be used to shoot when using a gamepad, without it you would have to jump with a and shoot with down. As for the crash you mentioned i'll try to figure it out!

What qualifies as 100%? Do I just need to collect everything, or can I not die or something?

PennyRigate responds:

Collect everything without getting a game over
