Reviews for "Code Red"

Really good game, the graphics are great, the music intense and creepy, but I think the controls H, J, and k should be moved over to J, K, and, L. It just feels more natural that way. Secondly, I think the hit boxes should be a little bit bigger since you have to get right up in the scientist's face to eat them and if you go a little bit over you still don't eat them. Same thing goes for the slash, every time I try to kill a group of soldier guys there always be a little left and it makes my health go down to the maximum health to just 3 squares. Other than that pretty solid. And yes, I do know this was made for a jam.

Pretty fair feedback about the game, we really appreciate your opinion and criticism, thanks a lot!

While this game is remarkably innovative and original, and while it is refreshing to play essentially as the bad guy for once and tear people apart, there are a good number of bugs in this game. On some mid air deaths, your character will cycle through the death animation in that same position, rather than go to the ground. Added to this, the character will possibly run through the cycle a second time. The order of which the tips are presented, such as the "using the shout will cost you a heart" or however it is stated, is positioned farther into the game after it is introduced to the player character. If the game was longer, I wouldn't have had a complaint with it. And while the mysterious "I'm getting closer to the room" dialogue by the player character was interesting and made me invested with the game's resolution, the eventual ending of you meeting a possible loved one is less than satisfying. As the player, you have no reason to be invested in this new character, regardless if the player character seems to be in love with it. And even though the reveal that the character was capable of complex thoughts at the end, rather than a savage abomination is pretty interesting, it would have been better if the game was longer. The transitions of going from one area to the next made it feel like it was going to be longer, and got me invested in the game, only to see that it ended with a less than satisfying conclusion. The music was definitely great, and made me feel pretty badass as I turned armed guards into stains on the wall, so kudos to eduardo95. The background detail with the bodies on display was interesting, but if there was a greater variety, with some looking horribly deformed, the immersion in the game would have been better. If this game was longer, and included a better ending, or at least an ending that I could have been invested in, I would have definitely given it 5 stars rather than 3.5.

VeryEvilTomato responds:

eduardo95 didn't make the music, he only made the sound effects, we wish we could've made the game longer but the time we had for the jam really made it hard for us to create more content (3 days, released 12 this month and polished till today), we're sorry for the bugs and we'll see if we can do something about that with time, and sorry if the conclusion wasn't satisfying enough, andddd thanks for considering the game innovative and original! We hope that you enjoyed the game even with all of these issues! :)

Pretty good game. Simple concept with an interesting little plot.
The only real problem I had was with the controls; specifically, the dynamic of grabbing onto and jumping away from the walls. That could be a little more refined, as its "stickiness" led to a lot of my deaths, especially when trying to move up past wall turrets. Other than that, I don't have any real complaints.

VeryEvilTomato responds:

Pretty fair feedback, we're glad you had a good time playing the game! Glad you found the plot interesting

Great work man. My only complaint would be that it's a little hard to play after you die and turn invisible.

VeryEvilTomato responds:

I'm sorry about the difficulty spike :( But I'm happy that you enjoyed our work, although I don't understand well the invisible thing, could you please explain in a PM?

Definitely a nice game, especially if it's a game Jam product.

I don't think it's intended, but you can actually finish the game without killing anyone, which is a fun thing to allow in this type of game.
I suspect it's even possible to do it without breaking turrets
I liked the not-too-in-depth story. I think it speaks for itself pretty well.
not sure if people are busting the door open or if the whole place is exploding at the end though.

Controling your moves mid-air, especially during wall jump is kinda hard (actually i couldn't pull the wall grabbing mechanic in an easy and consistent manner, probably because of the required press on UP)
I don't really know of there is a fixed pattern in the attack rythm of ennemies, i really liked their IA even if basic (they can stop when they see you, waiting for you to come) but i sometimes felt shooting ennemies were shooting instantly when jumping right in front of them and i had no time to react.
against hordes of ennemies i could either mash the jump and get out without a scratch, or get kicked to death in an instant. this lead to strategies where i might just go full retard die and retry until i get no damage.
Lastly I didn't understand that the white squares were your health, it took me a few deaths to realize it, it could be clearer.

Hope the critics help you improve in any possible way, should it be this game or another
Really cool, and keep up the great work

VeryEvilTomato responds:

Thanks a lot for the fair feedback and I'm glad you enjoyed the game, programmer added some hotfixes for movement and climbing, and in some situations the scream is the best way to go (With big groups), really sorry if some issues bothered you like health not being so clear :).
