Reviews for "Oni Yu Can Scare Them"

"Screw this scaring bulls***! I wanna pick up the pot and just throw them at people!' - First Impressions

Oni Yu Can Scare Them is a stealth platformer puzzle, and a pretty decent one to hit the newgrounds archives. The object is for you to scare all the white characters in area. You do this by possessing objects, and then walking into their visible sight. Upon success, the character will turn pink. Scare all characters in the area to proceed. There are 10 levels total, each with their own obstacles to stand in your way.

Here are the list of characters that are in this game...

ONI (Signature Colour: Red)
The character you play as. It is up for for Oni to put fear in people's hearts, and remind everyone of the Great Demon Lord.

VILLAGERS (Signature Colour: White)
The targets of your story. Villagers cannot see you unless you possess an object. Scare them to move onto the next level.

SAMURAI (Signature Colour: Orange)
These guys are not only immune to jar scares, they will kill you if you try it. Skulls are the only item that will send these warriors running for the hills. Like Villagers, Samurai characters cannot see you unless you possess an object, and has to be scared for you to complete the level.

SHAMAN (Signature Colour: Yellow) (Cannot be scared)
If the game has an antagonist, this would be it. Shaman's are immune to all forms of scares, and will move in to exorcize your soul once you are spotted. Once they are alerted, it is instant death the moment they touch you no matter what object you are currently possessing. You will also die if you touch him without being in possession of any objects. The key to getting past Shaman is to possess any object, then move one baby step at a time, and don't move whenever the green question mark appears over his head. Eventually, he will just walk past you, and then you can continue on your way.

FOX (Signature Colour: Yellow) (Cannot be scared)
Fox enemies will immediately go after you on sight! But they can't hurt you if you're in possession of an object. Use an object or Kappa to sneak past it.

KAPPA (Signature Colour: Green)
These creatures are just there for the hell of it, but may serve other purposes. Press S when standing next to them to create a bit of chaos.

"You can't see me! Can't touch this, whiteboy! Nope! Nope! I'm a ghost, so I could feel you up, and you wouldn't even know it happened! That's the real scary part-awh crap! The yellow guy can see me!" - Second Impressions

All Items you can use to scare people with...

RICE BAG (name make not be accurate, but that's what it looks like)
- Scares Villagers

JARS
- Scares Villagers
- Can be used to sneak past Shaman and Fox.
- Samurai characters will be able to kill you like Shamans

SKULLS
- Press S on a tomestone to spawn a Skull for you to possess.
- Scares Villagers and Samurai

BIRDS
- Scares Villagers
- Doesn't actually fly :(
- Takes rather large hops.

The fact that I actually gave a s*** to talk about the characters like this shows that it's a decently well-made game. In the short time playing, I had a lot of fun. But of course, a game isn't without it's issues...

- The level where the first samurai appears, if you continue travelling pass the tombstones, you will fly out-of-bounds. (100% confirmed bug)
- The game is way too short! I did a speedrun of it, from the moment it starts with it''s credits, all the way to the point of "The End" screen, and clocked in at 2M 21S. I feel like a big chunk of the game is missing, or like there was supposed to be 30 levels instead of 10 for this one game mode.

The graphics also aren't really the greatest, but the animations used for it are awesome! Everything flows so smooth. It has me wanting more. That is the best feeling a developer can drive out from gamers! It's just too bad that this game is so short. It could definitely be a hit series.
The final verdict for Oni Yu Can Scare Them is a 7 out of 10 - easily one of the best and unique games on this website. If we're lucky, we can get a series out of this, because it certainly has been earned.

Final Verdict: 7 out of 10

Troisnyx responds:

Thanks for going very, very in-depth with this review! Glad you enjoyed it, and the flaws are duly noted. We'd hoped gamers would want more, and I'm glad you feel that way!

To clarify some things:

1) The rice bag you speak of is actually a well. I probably didn't draw it as well as I ought, and with it being an immovable structure it just simply hops in place.

2) The bird you speak of is actually a chicken. Which probably looks like a bird in 16x16; I drew that too. Sorries. Meep.

3) Funny how you say there were meant to be 30 levels; we did actually contemplate how many levels there would be before deciding on the 10 that went into this game. So, yeah, you could smell that from a mile away. I do wonder if in future, we could consider an expansion pack or something along those lines... time will tell.

4) Someone below us mentioned the idea of adding more youkai to this game, which would have different mechanics from those already present in the game. I guess oni could be treated as some sort of youkai -- you can't necessarily see them, but you can sense their presence when they do things specific to them. (Technically they're not youkai, but still... I hope you get what I mean. Supernatural beings could probably only be sensed by those who are made to sense them, like shamans and other supernatural beings. I guess. Meep!)

This is what Atari should have been. It's very fun and feels original. I only had one problem with getting off on ladders to a roof. Cheers :D
