Reviews for "GRAND ADVENTURE!"

I like the illustrative graphics which are in stark contrast with the pixel game. Unfortunately, I couldn't escape from the crazy spiders.

Emptygoddess responds:

Mean ol spider!

i like it, but have n idea why you wouldn't just do programming, it's not difficult or unfun or incredibly time consuming

Emptygoddess responds:

Because.

I really love this game! It's a shame it's not done... I think I've gotten everything one can get in this version of the game. Got three out of 4 keys, got the girl... All I'm missing is the diamond (not gettable) and the last key (also not gettable).

From what I've read in the comments the last two things aren't achievable due to the game not being finished. All in all though the basic concept of the game is... Nostalgic and sad. It took me a bit to realize just what was really going on but when I did I was blown away by the actual depth the game held on a more emotional level. Congrats for creating something this amazing! I really hope someday this game does get done! I don't even care if I have to re do the whole thing over, it's a definite replay over and over in my books!

Emptygoddess responds:

Thanks for the nice review.

Major Issue: On the spider boss, once it reaches the top you can jump to the left or right and wind up outside of the level. Descending below the sea of spiders still kills you, even though you aren't touching them. It should be part of a secret instead.

Anyway, the game is decent. It's wrong to say things like "stunning" or "fantastic" because it isn't. It's a cut above the rest due to its depth, but it definitely isn't something you would want to experience over and over again. This game can only pass due to its simplicity. It can never be accused of being anything other than "neat".

Here are a few suggestions: I know that having any environmental detail is considered taboo in flash because it requires effort, but I can assure you that it would take less than four years (ha, ha) to make the environment not just a series of uniform colors. Adding more content is always a good idea. If this game were much longer then it would really be something special, though you would have to do away with the loop mechanic. Oh, and you can't just bring new characters in without giving them some build-up. Minimalism is nice, but if you expect me to care about a blob of black pixels that says "no don't" in the true ending, you're really overestimating the value of pixels. Come to think of it, the way you get the secret ending is flubbed. Obviously anyone wanting to figure it out themselves should not read this next part. You put all of the stones on the colored pedestals in front of the gate, and that's fine, but then how can you put all of them on the unseen pedestals in the boss chamber? Aren't they still technically outside? It would be nice if there were a different mechanic that you make use of in the boss room, instead of the same mechanic twice. Might be nice to add enemies too. Anything to make the sword and shield have more than five uses in total. Also: The text box scrolls too slowly. And come to think of it, the multiple text box thing that you see during the spider fight should be used more often. Just don't go overboard, because it could get old fast. And I like the gallery, and the attitude in the instructions, but here's something: If all you do is go for the true ending on your first try, you don't wind up with the entire gallery unlocked. I just don't have the energy for another run, so you might want to change that. Or make the game not doing the same things over and over again. Why not make it change when you loop?

Valid comments

===SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER===
I think this game is great, but since it' s unfinished I don't understand if some things are meant or are bugs, for example placing the red or the blue gem after defeating the last boss doesn't seem to do anything, placing the green gem makes you hanged but then you restart at the spider room with the spider defeated but moving as you were in a no-ladder screen; I thought it was a bug, till I noticed that I already had the sword and the bone-dragon was still in the corridor with the two doors but crushed its head on the already locked door, instead of chasing you like the first time... An enemy that behaves differently after you place a gem on a pedestal it's definitely not a bug! Or is it nonetheless? It very confusing. But it's confusing because it's unfinished, so why don't you finished it? Actually I wrote all this boring yawner to convince you to finished it, come on, it isn't finished and it got 2nd place and front page, imagine the success it will have if it were a properly finished game, considering that it lacks very few things. Sorry if I wrote "finished" and "unfinished" many times, I couldn't come up with a synonymous.

Emptygoddess responds:

Actually the bone dragon just has two ways to defeat it. Which has messed with more than a few people. That is indeed a bug. Sorry about that!
