Reviews for "A.R.B.F."

The game is very nice and hard at the same time. the medals were a pain to get though(but they were fun and challenging). and the 1 minute medal says you have to beat it in 1 minute or less, but i finsihed it in exactly 1 minute and i didnt get the medal. could you fix that. also can you give me a hint for the developer medal.

Zanzlanz responds:

Thanks zoaderman! I always feel like a game shouldn't be limited to a 2-minute experience, so I like to put in challenges :D I'm glad you thought they were fun though!

If you reload the game, you should get the 1-minute medal. (Good job, by the way!) I forgot to round down after I added milliseconds. Thank you for pointing it out :D

I'm hidden in a room. You have to do a bit of clever jumping and use gun recoil to reach the room. xD

As always, amazing game. And 35th place out of 1353? That's amazing! Great job.

[Gameplay]

I definitely enjoyed using both the WASD keys, and the arrow keys.
Focusing on the terrain while dodging the bullets from the boss was fun, no doubt. The boss room wasn't a thrill, though. Standing still and shooting left or right pretty much does the trick. Although, it's the same case for the boss as well.
It's a shame the level wasn't randomly generated like the weapons and items, but I doubt you had time for that.
Is it just me, or is the Guava Slice Gun incredibly strong?

Fast, exciting and addicting, this game is pretty much what any game developer should aspire for.

[Graphics]

Even though I don't mind the 3D graphics games have these days, I would switch for these in an instant. 16-bit, if I'm not mistaken.

In any case, they're great as always.

[Story]

Little to no story. You have to rescue an unconventional item (i.e. Bubblegum Sheep) from the Villain's grasp.

Pretty vague, so I'm not the biggest fan of it.

[Music]

The music was well made, and sometimes I actually sang along. Can't complain about it, honestly.

[Addictiveness]

I would play this again, no doubt. I loved most of the 13 achievements. Incredibly fun, yet challenging.

[Difficulty]

It was pretty hard at the beginning, since I wasn't used to the controls. A few matches later, I was outstanding, if I do say so myself.

Don't get discouraged by the starting difficulty, it clears pretty fast.

[Overall]

Addicting and incredibly fun as always, Zanzlanz has created another amazing game. It deserves the rating of 3.5 stars, no doubt. I recommend it to anyone who likes platforming Shoot 'em ups.

Zanzlanz responds:

Thanks (yet) again Exodius7! It's always great to see your opinions, so I appreciate you taking the time to write something for ARBF :)

I sure learned a lot from making this, being my first side-scrolling shooter game. Platforming was a key thing to get right, straight away.

My entire plan from the start was to make a game completely focused on a generic retro boss fight (I didn't like the theme for Ludum Dare, so I made up my own goal haha). Basically each time you play, you are jumping to another alternative universe in order to defeat all of the villain's plans. Pretty silly XD

I let the player decide what might have caused a particular universe to use guavas as a weapon, or why the villain might be collecting chocolate helicopter blades (for evil, obviously). But that's basically the story.

And it seems to be just you about the overpowered guavas, haha. All weapons have the exact same properties. I actually was fooling around with giving them different speeds, effects, and knockback, but in the end it was impossible to balance, and it made the game less enjoyable.

Anyway, I'm glad you enjoyed it! And it's true that the controls are probably the biggest factor in difficulty in this. Once you get those down, it's pretty easy to beat the boss. That's definitely a big reason why there are achievements, haha.

Thank thee!

Clever and creative.

While it doesn't extend much beyond "Chase this guy and shoot him," there's a certain charm and quirk to this game I really like. I guess one of the reasons being because your motivations of fighting the boss, and your weapon along with his, all being randomized at the start, making for some rather hilarious scenarios that I can think up in my head as to what was going on. It plays around with your imagination, and I really enjoy that. The combat's nothing to write home about, but good for what it is; you fight the boss as he flees, rebounding shots and rescuing whatever random creatures are in the cages, until you reach the end and defeat him. For a late Ludum Dare entry, I really enjoyed it. You did good, and should feel proud about what you made. Until then, are you missing your CHOCOLATE HELICOPTER BLADES!?!

Zanzlanz responds:

Woa! Thanks for your nicely-worded review!

As you seem to have noticed, I am trying to get the most replayability I can out of one level. Since the original idea was focused entirely on the weapons, I figured it wouldn't be much of a problem. I guess from a purely-gaming standpoint, it can get boring quickly, but I like to think there's more to it than that.

It's awesome that you were using your imagination to come up with back-stories! I hope a lot of other people do that too! That was my hope!

Thanks so much again, and YES, I WILL GET THEM BACK WITH MY SALTED FLUTE LAUNCHER! Hahaha!

awesome game. i keep coming back to it. maybe add more levels. more bosses. most characters you can be. but still awesome game

Zanzlanz responds:

Thank you MedRich! I currently don't have the motivation to continue with this particular basis, but I would really love coming up with a brand new game with all the code that I got so far :D

Well the half helath was a little challenge.
I might know where you are in game but I can't seem to get there in game.

Zanzlanz responds:

You sort of have to perfect a particular movement technique to get to me.
