This is one of the only Mario spinoff/tribute/fan games which doesn't suck. Usually it's some horrible attempt at a platformer where it's not even clear the author even played the originals. To be clear, the official Mario games all tend to be very good, with few exceptions -- it's the fan/tribute games which tend to almost all suck.

So good job on actually staying somewhat true to the source material. It's not as smooth as the official games, but that's more of a nitpick.

That final last boss is unforgiving though. Like Dr. Wily in Mega Man VII unforgiving. I don't recall any of the bosses in actual Mario games being as unforgiving as that. Since the game does include references to Mega Man (and Metroid, Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat, Kirby, am I missing any??) I feel it's fair to discuss.

Too be fair, there are some good Mario fan games out there. It's just that Mario fans tend to skew quite young, and younger fans tend to lack the experience and insight to make a solid game.

The whole game was designed with people who find the official Mario game trivially easy in mind. And that's also the very last thing the player needs to do and optional content. So it is supposed to be harder. I'd also hesitate to call it unforgiving. Difficult, yes, but I give the player an unending supply of mushrooms in that fight, as well as a 1up mushroom in the room before, so it's hardly unforgiving. The next game will probably be easier, or at least have a more even difficulty curve. Off the top of my head, I think you mentioned all the big references. There are a ton more in the flower faces.

The game itself is awesome, but...

World 2-4, just frick off!

The sun's and moon's movement is very unfair, and 1 part is really really challenging for people like me. But the game itself is great. The movement can be changed in the settings and make for some people really easy. The whole idea is great, the power-ups and characters too.

There's a rhythm to the sun/moon. And they always move relative to the screen. Try to think of it as a skipping rope.
