Reviews for "Geffenvaniac"

The game was all nice and cool and awesome (even with the slow-walking xP), until I randomly fell through the ground, disappeared and "died"!
But I'd still recommend it highly!

I have read the secret .txt file.
(I will admit that it took me two replays of the game and farming myself up to Rank A right before the boss, though)
Personally I don't mind the UI and think the cat is awesome, but I'm probably in the minority. (Would be interesting if this is the same universe as Ragnarok Eternal and this is the same gunslinger that watches you from atop that ledge...)
I like the idea of having to learn through a game rather than just blast away, but again, I'm probably in the minority. Desert Regal felt less like something for damage and more like something used to repeatedly ping things just under or over your line of fire; may or may not have been the intent.
My main feedback is that it was a bit frustrating getting enough fights with the Guardian to learn to avoid her attacks, as I only got a couple shots at it even after farming bats to fill the gauge, and then had to restart the game in order to be able to max the gauge again. YMMV; this may be intentional and it probably did make finally beating her more satisfying, though repeating the game and re-farming the bats for a while was a bit tiresome.
I might tentatively ask for some way to lock the difficulty at the highest level, or otherwise increase it without grinding a bat-spawn (Maybe as an unlockable? A card equip? Require a resource spend?); or at least without restarting the game to get another shot at whatever one might want to challenge at the maximum difficulty. That said, I'm not as experienced in this type of game as others might be, so I'm not completely certain how that would affect the overall experience.

I look forward to your next work, whether an expanded version of this, Eternal, or something else entirely.

ShadowWhoWalks responds:

thanks, glad to hear your opinion on the subject. The secret boss is reserved for those who mastered the game (not taking damage while progressing).

The difficulty rank thing still needs adjustment; if the rank moves up too slow it gets frustrating like your case, but if difficulty ramps too fast, the player may be overwhelmed.

I could add some options here and there.. but at the end of the day it's opinions like yours that count.

So far, this is a pretty solid game, or game demo if I say so myself. I was wondering though, where does the music for the game come from?

Ragnarok Online OST
and El Shaddai: Ascension of Metatron

Amazing game, i loved Ragnarok Eternal as well.

Compared to Ragnarok Eternal, this game is MUCH more linear. While this game is a Megaman Zero the previous game is a Metroidvania. While in this game the weapons are limited to 5 weapons and sub-weapons (per-class) the other game, because of the RPG elements, appeared to have more possibilities. I'm sure that THIS game is better programing wise.

Being able to Level-UP and gather money to buy items and upgrade your character is a mechanic that FELLS good, AND being unable to acquire All the Upgrades also makes the game more complex, because you can build your own play style.

I was planing on saying that i liked Ragnarok Eternal more, or at last its Mechanics but while i wrote this i had an Epiphany.

--------------------------------------------------------------

So, here is my Suggestion: Add those RPG elements to THIS game ==> For example, between Stages, have a world map and while in the World Map, Let us Buy Weapons and other things, AND Change our Equipment. When we enter a Level we can Only Bring 5 weapons and Sub weapons.
(However making that many weapons for the classes might be tiring. VERY tiring)

Also, Maybe there could be Two kinds of Stages? Linear ones and Metroidvania like ones, with Save points scattered.

--------------------------------------------------------------
(please forgive me if my sugestion bothers you)
--------------------------------------------------------------

Also:

1) Is it Possible to choose another class to Play with or The game only have one Character Avaliable.

2) What Are The Jelopy Essence For?

3) After Finishing the game, and getting a Crystal and a Password, i collapsed the game. When i came back to it My save file was gone. Could you make it possible to save our progress? Or does the manner i used to Exit the game made the game unable to save?

ShadowWhoWalks responds:

glad you liked it, and thanks for the review!
I'm taking a megaman approach to this: explore and collect upgrades instead of farming exp - but it is very unfortunate if it doesn't feel as GOOD as leveling up. I wanted more depth, but not at the expense of FEELSGUD.

this is more like something I whipped up to test the waters, an entire playthrough shouldn't take more than 15 minutes, as there is only 1 stage and a few secrets here and there.

The full game will include overworld, maps, shops, and 6 playable classes. Will finish when I eventually blow an arm and a leg.

I'll try to adjust to players as much as possible. Keep the suggestions rolling and many thanks!

Loved it. I have played the megaman zero series and some megaman classic, and some castlevania so I'm used to platform game. The game was neither too hard or too easy for me, probably because of the rank system managed to adapt the difficulty. The first time I could get to the boss (and die) with a rank C I think, and the new ennemies were a pleasant surprise during the following replays.

I've played a lot ragnarok online before, so the nostalgia feeling is very strong for me in this game. While I know that it's very close to ragnarok online, the windows are sort of empty, especially the cards one. Maybe you could add "skins" to choose alongs the "default" one. Were all the cards/items supposed to be useful ? I didn't see any water attack for the cornutus card (beside from the cornutus itself, encountered once) or ranced meat (unless I missed some secrets, and the wall turkey seems alright to eat without the green zombie card, and wasn't it supposed to be a "Ghoul card", not "green zombie card" ?).
I didn't found a situation where the Desert Regal's spread shoot is useful, because each shoot are weaker than the default weapon, and in case of swarms of enemies like the bats I'll use a full charged shot from the revolver. Perhaps you could make so that the four shoots are garented to hits at close range because currently only two hits at close range, or allow them to pierce trought targets.
But maybe I'm talking too much since it is an experimental game.

And I see nothing wrong with playing with a protagonist wearing a cat, I used to play Ragnarok online with the very same cat.
As you could guess I got the notes dropped by the A rank boss. But after reading the note it's impossible to go back to the beginning with all items found? I wished I could so that I can try to get all the cards, since we can with a rank below A (and does dracula drop a card ?). And the button on the last page of the notes is not in english.
While it's nice to change weapons and subweapons, I think it could be useful and faster if there was additionnal buttons to at least switch between weapons and sub-weapons.

That's all for my review. I'm looking forward for yours nexts games !

ShadowWhoWalks responds:

I really appreciate the detailed review. It's good to hear first-hand experience from seasoned platformer players. I will implement your suggestions: adjustment on weapons, and quick keys for swapping.

My current problem is probably the interface windows. I want to keep it close to the source for the sake of nostalgia, but like you said many people have been complaining about its look.
