I enjoyed this display of a young artist's cruel reality and am sure many can relate. Now what's an alternate solution to his problem besides suicide?

well, one would have to find new alternative means to make use of his skills. if the artist refuse to change and sticks to that one medium, yeah, it will be tough.
so one may have to be adaptive and find other ways to make good use of his/her skills and talents
You just got to get angry! It would be stereotypical of me to say that business men tend to not be generous when it comes to money. "Hey this artist did a fantastic job, I've got an extra three hundred bucks in the budget that I haven't decided to use yet."
