This is probably my favorite memory of the game, so it was so brilliant of you to put this together. I mean, what kind of tree moves around and explodes? Weird even even for Earthbound...
I think the voice fit pretty well, but I do agree that the backgrounds were all very good but very different. Good job!
I am sure glad the creators of the game tried to maintain realism in the game by including the tree, because, you know, a territorial oak hellbent on killing every lifeform by draining its energy and performing kamikaze is completely normal, a menace only guts can withstand.
But enough of that --- You demonstrated your perspective very well within this short animation, and I like that you chose to conceptualize a seemingly insignificant particular in the Mother series. I can sympathize completely, especially due to the animation's drawing style , which not only provided emphasis on the subject matter but also your purpose. (Although the Ness drawn in the loading screen looks slightly awkward with its rather large chin)

Yeah, the Ness in the loading screen was actually my first attempt at drawing him. It's not so much a huge chin as it is me trying to accentuate his cheeks, which didn't quite work out. I decided to just make his head round in the final animation :p.

I think what he means with the background is the different artstyle of the background and the characters ( I THINK )...
I tried to keep my background styles looking consistent, but I had a few other background artists so yeah, I can see how that would be a bit distracting. I'll have to let others know I want a certain style of background if I bring on other background artists again. On the subject of backgrounds and characters having different styles, I kinda like the contrast, though I suppose I could still use some more polish on one of those.
I think it would be more interesting either for comical effect and for reasoning if the tree EXPLOUDED in flames cause damage instead of just randomly catching fire, but man, that was great, love the fact that the Earthbound community is rising all the time :)
Oh believe me I had the same reaction when I got to that part too. Always nice to have another Earthbound parody on board
