Reviews for "Hobo 7 - Heaven"

Not bad...

SeethingSwarm responds:

Thanks for the nice score!

this was epic!

SeethingSwarm responds:

Thanks! :)

I can't say that I like this series, I mean, I've played... at least part way, through most of them. And firstly, they are solid games. I've run into little in regards to actual play problems. I mean, there's the rough spots every flash-side-scroller has (especially in regards to collision) but overall this is very playable.

But I really don't want to play it. The grossout humor/mechanics really aren't my thing. I don't super enjoy using every available bodily fluid as a weapon, though the concept is admittedly pretty unique (at least, in my sheltered experience). But this isn't really a drawback of the game itself: it's just a matter of preference or taste.

But we do get into the issue that... every single game in this series feels the same. Not as much as some artists, but... certainly enough to put me off playing all 7? of them. This is not to say they are identical, but I feel like mechanically you stopped innovating even as the location and story moved on. I do like the fact that each story begins more or less the same way, but in an increasingly more absurd setting.

So why 3.5 stars? Because I like to see game developers (especially great game developers, as SeethingSwarm has proven themselves to be) to reach for higher and greater goals. Is that hypocritical, considering I haven't made a single one? And that making a single game requires tremendous amounts of work? Sure. But I also really don't want to see any more of these games.

SeethingSwarm responds:

I can certainly see all of your points and I agree with a lot of them. Regarding gameplay and overall content, the Hobo series does not change very much with each episode. The overall concept, story and execution is pretty much the same in every episode, but is done on purpose and I think it serves the simplicity of this game pretty well and I can say this without feeling too arrogant considering most people really like the series, but I do see your point.

All in all Hobo is supposed to be a simple series of games that can be seen as one epic adventure. It is purely meant for a laugh and a fun time, which I think I accomplished pretty well, mostly. I think it is a good time for the series to end, and if Hobo will ever make a comeback, it will be in a updated, fresh and much improved form than this. At the moment, with the demise of Hobo, I am busy with much bigger projects and I hope you do not think that I am NOT reaching for higher goals or not attempting to improve on game design, because I am constantly reaching for this in other, newer projects such as Evil Forest amongst many others.

Thank you for a very nice review and all the constructive criticism, I really appreciate you being fair and objective even though this is not your type of game. Much appreciated! :)

ehhhhh

SeethingSwarm responds:

eh.

WILL THIS BE THE END.....OR NOT...?

SeethingSwarm responds:

It is the end of THIS series, but is it the end of Hobo? ;)
