Reviews for "Cold Memories"

over all defenitely good... but you really need to work on a lot of things to deserve the full 5 stars:
1: the game is dialogue heavy... perfectly fine. what's not fine? having to figure out for myself the 'no dialogue on page' was the end of the dialogue for that screen... also not fine: having to constantly hit the next button on a couple of the frames. just in general, the whole thing could've been better in how it was displayed.
2: the "cutscenes" where it was just wording, -desperately- needed to have the s key be added to tell it is ok to move on... the 1st one that popped up, for example, caught me completely off guard... and I had NO idea what it had just said past the first sentence.
3: plot holes: see below (spoiler warning)
4: the gameplay had a very nice pace to it... but you really could have made it even just a tad bit more challenging... if your ever afraid of making a game to difficult... put in a difficulty setting, platforms especially are easy to do this, because the only difference between levels can be you start at minimal difficulty, then the higher the difficulty, the more things are added in.

other then these things... it's defenitely decent... especially compared to the original. just keeping working on it, and I'm sure you'll be just fine.

***spoiler alert for rest of review***
1: you imply he kills the mom and cat... and yet the door is locked preventing him from getting in... you never explain how he got inside in the first place to do it... or how they died if by other means.
2: in heat... I very clearly remember his friends name being 'Sam' ... in this game... it's suddenly 'Alex'

I loved it, the music was good, and the story was good, and it did make me feel. Good job.

Good effort on making a whole game, I know its not easy, I think next time you could focus a bit more on making the art more consistent. You had good character designs for the player, seemed very alive and engaging, but the backgrounds and levels were sort of sub-par. The gameplay and level design was essentially nonexistent, and seemed less engaging because there was no integration between how I experienced the story and how I played the game; simply pressing a key to scroll through text in the top right while playing a game isn't a story, it makes me focus on the two tasks separately as opposed to bringing them together into some greater whole. Having the hard to read text stuck in the top left isn't really interesting as far as design goes (not dynamic) and draws the focus away from the character. The story itself was alright, could use some more work there developing some depth to the dialogue, and the effort at the beginning to force the other game on players seem a bit jarring and unprofessional, but maybe necessary.

I'm happy you made something which seemed personal, made good use of music and some character designs, but overall I'm left asking "Why is this a game?" You seem like you have a story to tell and I won't discourage that, but you don't seem like you have any ideas for making a game to play, if you're worried about gameplay making players quit then you aren't doing it right, it doesn't add anything. Its part of the medium, either make it a key and interesting part of the experience or try out a different medium.

Uhm, a good story, but it completely contradicts what happened in the first game. In the first game, we never found katherine. We just ended up killing a bunch of people then hurling ourselves off a cliff.

Dark06Star responds:

Yeah exactly.. because Katherine is dead O.o he thought she was alive in the game "Heat" but in the end he remembered that she was dead so he jumped off the cliff (killed himself)

-1 for bad gameplay, especially hit detection. (Refer to the Company of Myself and its sequel, Fixation for the definition of smooth gameplay)
-1 for stealing music. (Normally it's a deadly -5 sin, but I admire your taste. You have still disappointed Nagi, though) (Refer to the NG movie Lilium for how to credit the music, at least)
-1 for a snail-pace dialogue speed. (Refer to Air Pressure or Phantom Seed for a good speed)
-1 for ****'s sake, Y U NO compress (Refer to Snow Snow for Lucy)
-0.5 for a half-kitsch story (Refer to RPG Shooter: Starwish for a good story)
-0.4 for lacking a replay button
+2 for creating good atmosphere. Not many flash games care about atmosphere anymore.
-0.1 for not using spellcheck.
-0 because this game and Heat reminds me of my pain when I was studying Wuthering Heights. Even the girls' names are similar.

I, personally, do not think this deserves frontpage, but I believe NG admins' tastes. It shows that you have aptitude. My humble suggestion would be, learn how to program flash games nicely, or just do visual novels like Air Pressure.

Cheers and stay beautiful.

Dark06Star responds:

I didn't steal the music. I never claimed they were mine, yet I didn't just take the music I did some editing to them -.-, also it's not like I am making money out of other peoples work. And I did compress as much as I could, so that too.. I'm sorry you don't like the game. It's not for everyone I guess ^^.
