Reviews for "Contra - Last Hero"

Good game however you can just hold down 'j' and 'L' at the same time killing the majority of enemies before they hit the ground making it rather easy.

meh

I wouldn't ask for perfection, but you should have made the levels like Contra to get a higher score.

You have the controls wrong in the beginning. The game could use more work it reminds me of the original contra series for nes.

The game suffer from a lot of flaws. The most important being its ultra-awkward controls and the unability to bind keys so you may not use the controls offered by the game.

Given you manage to get through the control issues, you are greeted by some of the cheapest level design that one may conceive, which really make it obvious that this is another of those infinite platformers with randomly created worlds... and in this case, the randomizer pattern is very lazy. The game will often throw shooter enemies that are just high enough to shoot at you but too low to be reliably hit with anything but grenades, which are hard to aim due to their seemingly random trajectory.

Greatly adding to the problem are the fact that projectiles are nigh-impossible to see, no thanks to the blatant abuse of particle effects.

To make it all worse, the graphics are horribly balanced ; very tacky menu and level graphics mixed with detailed SNES sprites. It's very jarring to say the least.

The game is not a total loss ; if you actually took the time to design randomized level chunks and better enemy placement, the game could be very enjoyable. Likewise, you could do things to improve the graphics, like trying to make the foreground match the background and ditching those default buttons for something more appropriate. I'd recommend either removing the particle effects or making projectiles flash so they may actually be seen (and thus, dodged). Also, a problem with most endless games lies in repetitive music ; unless the theme you chose is one you are sure that the players can't get sick of, have a varied soundtrack with the music swapping once in a while to prevent reptition.

Due to the rather large amount of flaws making the game not very playable, I am forced to give this a single star score. The game does work in many ways ; the gun + grenade mechanic reminded me of Metal Slug and pulled off with fixed levels and graphics fixes, this could be very interesting. But in its current state, the game deserve a blam, I'm afraid.
