Well hey, I didn't take you by surprise. I pretty much told you flat out.
It has artistic merit - and the soundtrack is creepy as hell (nice choice). But as a game after 4 plays I can't get past the second level. It gets frustrating fast. 3 of 4 times I played I made it to the second level but couldn't find a single candle there. Is that on purpose or did I just not play it well? I'm certainly not the best gamer, but not the worst either - so if you want this as a story first and game second I would suggest making it a bit more easy/intuitive.

That's kind of funny, since I found the 2nd level to be the easiest. It has the fewest clickable items, maximizing your chance of each location containing the note. Although I admit the candles are hard to find on level 2.
If you really get stuck and just want the story, just make sure to click as many items as you can before you game over. It won't guarantee a win, but you'll get lucky sooner or later.
I think it really needs a walkthrough.

This isn't as complex of a game as Johnny Rocketfingers or Inculcation; there are no inventories. You just click and explore with the mouse, and the journal pages are hidden in a random location every time.
