Reviews for "Basic Maze Game"

First, let me just congratulate you on breaking onto the game-making scene! :D I've been trying to do that for as long as I can remember, but I can never seem to bring myself to finish any one project. :P I saw in the description that you've been taking lessons and that this is your first game, so congrats on this major milestone. :)

Having said that, here are some things to look out for in the future. First, the controls are VERY slippery. Slight acceleration/deceleration usually isn't that big a deal, but the character takes WAY too long to start and stop here. This could be a cool effect if there were patches of ice or oil slicks or something, but it shouldn't be the core game mechanic, especially when the hit detection is this brutal. Which brings me to point two: the hit detection is BRUTAL. The spikes seem to get you just before you lightly tap into them, and being even a few pixels away from a wall gets you stuck in place, unable to move in any direction except directly away from the wall. And, finally, the penalty for losing: namely, being called an idiot. I assume that it's supposed to be funny (like GLaDOS mocking the player in Portal), but without any context, characters, or backstory, the message "You lose, idiot" just comes across as mean. Try adding in some story, a theme, a reason to be going through the maze, just something that makes calling the player an idiot appropriate in context. But anyway, I understand this is your first game ever, so obviously it's not going to be perfect. The important thing is that you continue to practice and get even better in the future. (He said, as if he had ever actually finished making a game and had some sort of authority. :P) Again, congrats on making your first game, and good luck in the future! :)

The tl;dr version:
Liked: It's the author's first game ever, which is no minor feat.
Liked less: It comes with most of the problems you'd expect from a first game: slippery controls, sticky walls, buggy hit detection, and an inexplicably mean losing message.
All in all: It's an honest attempt that, while it is far from perfect, is a very important first step for the author.
Stars: 1.5
Smiley: :O

CammyB08 responds:

thanks for the response mind if i use it in my feedback assessment for my 1st year university review.......which strangely happens at the start of the second year.

The controls were a bit sticky and I got stuck to the walls many times... Try making it easier to move the character. The art was also a little boring.

I like the idiot at the end but you slide around like a piece of butter on a pan

CammyB08 responds:

yer it was to easy when you had full control of the character so i changed it so that you get faster by 0.4 every frame a key is held down i was considering having a minimum and maximum on how fast or slow you could go but it wouldn't work how i wanted and the character just went all over the place

At first i kind of liked the idea of a new maze game, as all of the others are getting pretty old. However this game is not what i was hoping it to be. one of the things that was a pretty big put off was the fact that every time i moved it was hard to stop but I didn't see any reason for it, was there ice or something? Another thing you could improve on it is maybe shrinking the spikes and adding some other obstacles like fire balls maybe? All in all it's pretty good for a first game and practice makes perfect so keep trying :)

the game idea is nice but the controls are messed up at some points it wants to do what u say and ate some it makes it so u can't stop
