Reviews for "Battle of New Shanghai"

feels like metriod and it gets repetitive in the missions its okay but a lot of detail and work put into it. I like the oldie 8-bit look to it.

You should have called this game "Battle of new Tyrian"

the game should have been more engaging if the gameplay was faster and more fluid (it slows down when there are more than one ore two enemies)

and i really didn't like the soundtrack, it isn't catchy enough

anyway all those things can surely be improved in future works

An ok Space shooter, I did like that you shot automatically, and held a button not to shoot. That made things much easier. The visuals are very good to the point of being professional. The music is a little repetitive, but what really kills it is that it's actually kinda boring. The levels scroll by far too slowly, and after just one or two upgrades to the gun I was killing nearly all the enemies even before they came on screen, and each level being almost ten minutes long didn't really help.
I noticed there was a rating system at the end of the levels, and I got A's on all the levels except the scrapyard, but not knowing what that grade is based on, there was no incentive for me to go back and play through the whole level again.
As a side kicker, I went through and beat the game, but at the end of New Shanghai the game glitched on me. I killed the boss, and the dialogue went through, but then I was just stuck on that screen and had to press J to get out. at which point it was an automatic mission fail.
The idea of the sentinel side kick was nice, but not very helpful. He could take damage for you, but the way he followed you around didn't really allow for a very strategic or tactical way of using him as a shield. I'm sure his extra bullets were helpful, but once I was upgraded, and my shots filled nearly the entire screen I was more just kept confusing him with a baddie than him actually being helpful.
As for the clicking abilities, that was a nice touch, though again, I found only the original one to be useful. Most of the enemies were dead before making them unable to shoot was helpful, and I was maneuverable enough (and didn't want to drag the long levels on any further) That I didn't need the "Super speed" upgrade. The magnet was nice, and the shield was nice, however, again, I was maneuverable that it was the most beneficial to be able to kill enemies on the other side of the screen as well as those behind me, and it wasn't too shabby with the bosses either.
Finally, I never upgraded to a different fighter because the added damage and energy regeneration wasn't worth the loss in speed, added to the fact that the ships were just superbly expensive, and there was no way I was doing any grinding (through the long long levels) to get them when I was already kicking ass as it was.
So good, but not great. a nice time waster if nothing more.

I noticed you did put up credit for Daniel Cook's art. I just wonder if you where allowed to just bluntly copy all of tyrians art and place it together in a way less smooth game. Besides the graphical resemblence of Tyrian+dialog resembelence it is terrible. Flying goes slow, the pace in the game is just on a way to low level. And even on hardcore the game is a breeze. There is no challange what so ever.

Would Love to see a more proper credit to Tyrian aswell... The blunt copying you have done now is more then just Daniel Cook's art.

Truely a disappointing game.

Expecting nobody to recognize art from an old game like Tyrian is not a good excuse for uncredited theft of someone else's hard work.
