Reviews for "The Love Letter"

Pros:

Goddamn adorable pixel art, very well done.
Fluid controls, I especially like the fact that the movement speed is almost perfect.
Decent music that fits the situation.

Cons:

Very short and simple.
Little to no reason to replay once the game is complete.

Overall: This is a well made and high polished game. You've obviously set out to make something short, sweet, and nostalgic, and you've done that well. However, that very premise prevents it from jumping from "good" to "OMFG awesome". And that's okay, as trying to make this game more than what it already is would hurt that sweet, simple image and only mar the experience.

Short, simple, and semi-challenging. Beat it with 40 seconds left. I really enjoyed it. Good job. :D

Okay, I'm a big fan of pixel art and chiptune music, which influences the score I gave. It's hard for me appreciate a game where all the sprites and backgrounds are hand drawn. This takes me back to when I was a kid and Nintendo was a house hold term, back to the days when we talked about who got a love letter in their locker at school. There is a great sense of mystery and suspense as soon as the letter is found, and the excitement swells as you find a secret place to read the letter. No matter how many times I play it, it always feels like I'm reading the letter for the first time. The thrill of being found out makes it feel like I really am at school. It's interesting, yet a little frustrating, that the other students chase you around the hall. Although, can't they see what you're doing from a few feet away? The music is very appropriate to the situation in the game. Very nice.

There are a few things I'd change if I could program. I want to start the game much sooner than the text windows allow. I wish I could press a button and skip to the objective. I also didn't know that I could use the keyboard to move instead of the mouse until I read the description. Something like that should be explained in the game. I think that the other students should be on to you from a slightly greater distance. They aren't blind. There should also be other kind of students; those who take a great deal of interest in you and others who don't care. I see this as an introduction to the rest of a game that isn't there. I would love to see what happens afterward.

I have fun every time I play this. You get 5 stars!!

Thanks so much for the thoughtful review! It's great to hear how playing this game brought back those memories of school...

I appreciate the suggestions as well - I'll be releasing the source code soon, so hopefully other programmers will mod the game and try out some of the variations you've suggested. :) I'm really curious to see what people come up with!

i like the concept but the game is too fukin hard and i wanted to know what happens

All though very simple....still fun
