The classic I'd never had the opportunity to play
After finally beating the game (it took me at least 3 serious attempts, not to mention the "just fooling around" ones), I may now be ready to write a review.
Graphics - 9/10 : the game remains faithful to the 8-bit style and yet manages to deliver a colorful experience with a good amount of variety of sprites. My only complain would be the fact that armours don't show on the character (with 8-bit style, that doesn't seem like a major pain to make, although the small sprites wouldn't show the armour properly)
Sound - 8/10 : the sound found in Cardinal Quest is also loyal to the 8-bit era, however, i would like to hear something more "epic" (something like choirs in 8-bit style would give not only a more "epic" feel but also a little comedic effect in my opinion). Some of the SFX kinda grew annoying, but that is part of the 8-bit genre I suppose.
Gameplay - 10/10 : I loved the game system, it's quite intuitive but also challenging and original. In some aspects, it's much more realistic than most action games out there. Some people complained about the lack of a save option, that also bothered me, but the game is short enough to be beaten in one sit. Playing with a thief and going all stealthy was pretty fun (I must desagree when the game says the thief is the most challenging character, when played right, it's much easier to beat the game using the thief).
This should sum up my impressions of the game. Cardinal Quest is very fun, nostalgic and challenging (pretty much like old role-playing games used to be, RPGs nowadays tend to be much more on the "hand-holding" side). The only part the disapointed me was that I didn't get to fight the Evil Minotaur... Maybe he'll have what's comming to him in the sequel. I'll be waiting.
Thanks for the game and thanks for reading, everyone. Godbless.
