Reviews for "Effing Adventure Games"

Interesting enough

I have seen bad ones put up on newgrounds before, and boy do I mean bad. I should give this a 2 and be done with it, but something caught my eye. Something that is rare to find on games in beta... POTENTIAL!!!

You got the ground work already laid out, yes the character flipping is funny/annoying. The wall cling isn't very useful unless you can jump from the wall, no enemies and its silent. All of these flaws have been mentioned and addressed.

Here are a few ides on what you can do. If its possible increase the size of the characters a bit. Give the program something more to work with so it can balance the gravity. Also allow a wall stick to let you jump again so you can save yourself from slips and not so nice falls. :) Just throwing them out there. Compared to me, you are a master at this. :)

You have a nice change in stages and you have a good fluid motion with the character. All you need are monsters, I believe you said you had zombies, and more puzzles. This is a great start and it can only get better. Keep up the work and I can't wait to see some updates to this or even a whole new game from you.

Thanks for the message EdanSwordblazer!.
As you mentioned I have already adressed most of the issues in your message and I am happy to let you know I am starting work on a nice big patch {Music,Art,Monsters,SFX and maybe twice as many levels in between) this coming weekend. Sadly I have school and cannot work on this much. I would like to thank you and everyone else who gave great feedback that will help me in future development of this game. If you have any more you would like to say I would be happy to take any questions that may have bothered you about this game.

Weird..

Is the character supposed to be able to run and jump while balancing on his head? You should look into that. Also, add some music or sfx next time. I didn't feel very motivated to finish the game when I'm forced to do it in silence.

Good luck on your next project!

DKC1011 responds:

Hey DavidStanly.
Thanks for your message.
As I have addressed in many messages the head thing was an unficable gravity glitch caused because the chracter was so small. as for the Sound i am still learning the program i use and don't know how to add music/sound yet but i will in a future update or a patch.
Thanks again for your message

sweet game

i noticed the character rotates a bit when he hits a object.if thats intended nice relisim.and i presume you're using stencyl?im new to it so yea lol.
but i never got the glitch at the end.

DKC1011 responds:

Hey Majormeltsackboy. Thanks for your message!. The character rotating was unfixable. Sorry about that. But I am glad for the feed back and thought it looked so cute to have him flipping as he fell down the stairs. Thanks again for the message major and tell me if you spot any glitches (that are unadressed already of course) thanks for playing.

Saved.

But you need to fix that glitch, of course. And also, there's an issue (that I'm not sure if it was intentional) that running into walls while falling causes the character to get stuck.

At any rate, a good game, plain but entertaining concept, and satisfying artwork.
+H+

DKC1011 responds:

Hi Hybridzation. I actually fixed the glitch at the end. Also I know he got stuck in the walls but I found this to be fixable with alot of effort (Of course I would put in the effort for you guys) but It is a helpful asset that could rescue the player if they are about to fall. Thanks for pointing it out and In the future I will try make the game more exciting for you guys ;). Have a fine evening.

Needs a LOT of work

Ok, you have the template here for a decent game, but as it stands right now theres nothing at all interesting about it. There's no story for whats going on here, no proper goals or tasks. Theres no real sense of danger since the game is so easy. Add to that most of the "levels" don't have anything that could hrt or kill your character and all you're left with is walking from screen to screen.

There seems to be some kind of problem with the character as whenever you jump with him, he turns and you can basically end up with him walking along on his head, or along his side. This coupled with the fact that if you jump into a wall and hold the direction key into the wall means you can just stick to the wall Spiderman style means that there is some serious programming bugs that need to be worked out with regards to the controls.

The biggest thing you need to rectify here though is the complete lack of sound during the game. Nothing. Nada. Silencio. You really don't know how much ANY kind of noise benefits a game until you play through one in silence. Even a generic looping track of music would have been something to add in to break the silence. But if you want to improve on this properly, sound effects are a must. The sound of rushing water during the waterfall/river part of the game, a bubbling lava sound for the well lava obviously. Even a classic "jump" noise for your character to make everytime he jumps much like in classic platformer games.

There needs to be a source of conflict here too, some kind of story. Even if the story was something as simple as the guy was climbing a hill one day when he fell in a disused mine shaft or something and had to find another way out. Then have the crux of the gameplay being him trying to escape the mountain. Of course, you'd need enemies that wouldn't look out of place in a mountain cave so add enemies like spiders, rats and bats. Even if you were to rework the game you currently have but add these enemies to the levels that are totally bland and boring like 3/4 and have you needing to avoid them as you travel through the caves. Really, something is needed to spice this up a bit.

Like I said, this needs a LOT of work, but its not totally irredeemable and is a strong foundation from which a good game could grow. But you need to take the time to implement things like sound/enemies or really most people won't give this game a chance.

DKC1011 responds:

Dear Daedo-The-Mofo. I am about to try most to adress most of the issues you addressed in your clever, albeit lengthy message.

First - The lack of story and goals : I understand that the story is lacking (because there is none) and I understood this upset most people. I am sorry. I am only learning how to use the program I used to make the games and although its possible I have not learned how to implement cut scenes. The same goes to sound. I had an entire music track produced for this game. And could not implement it. but i will attempt to add jumping and dying sounds in a future update.

Second - Gravity and Tile glitches : Alot of people have referenced these in there messages. When you fall on your side this is what I call a "gravity glitch." This is based on the fact that the character is so small that he couldn't handle the gravity and didn't autobalance correctly. The tile glitch happened because of the pure shape of the tiles and it would require me to redo all of the tiles to fix this.

Third-Lack of the Danger element : I know that this is an extremely standing lack of features in this game. I wanted to add much more danger but found that the "pitfall" effect ended after the first jumped platform. I had ZOMBIES programmed in and all but there tiny stature made them useless as i wanted it to be like mario where you stamped on them and they died. But because they were so small they took walking into them as stamping on them and that just wouldn't do. So I ended up not using them.

Thanks again for your message, You point out alot of looming issues that break this game and I hope to adress most of them in a patch later on. Once I have a better understanding of the programs I use.
