What is beauty, eh ..
"Beauty is what you make of it" and "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder" are nearly the same statement, and that was the first thing I interpreted from the flash. However, saying beauty is what you make of it is actually a step back from stating it's something perceived, as you perceive something before you form an opinion about it.
What this would imply is that you need to form an opinion of things before they can be beautiful. It may also suggest that one person can perceive something thoroughly oneself and then present it fresh to others via various forms of media so that they too can perceive said form of beauty and form an opinion regarding it. Another way to look at it would be that a good opinion needs to be formed about beauty before it can be preserved in a permanent form for future onlookers. The latter is more what I got out of this flash than the former.
There are two huge arguments in the artistic community that have raged since the dawn of man .. whether beauty is a brilliant thing that can only sustain itself for a moment, or whether true beauty lasts forever. Seeing as my personal beliefs lead me to believe nothing ever lasts forever before breaking down and being rebuilt into something else, even matter itself, at the end of the day .. I cannot, in good conscience, endorse that beauty is what lasts a notable amount of time.
So we are at an impasse, sir! But I will share my opinion with a bit more thought than that, rather than simply disagree with you.
My definition of beauty is something that stimulates the senses - one's perception - to its fullest function for a moment in time. It is that one moment in time that someone has perceived true beauty. Though we seek to encapsulate the beauty we saw that moment into various mediums, our attempts will always fall short, falling through our fingertips like sand. What little we retain is not comparable to the beauty we had initially witnessed.
"Beauty is in the eye of the beholder" is just that, then, I would argue. No one other person will ever be psychologically stimulated in the exact same way as another regarding beauty, as we are all different. Not just different in our opinions, but our very perceptions of things are different, physically wired slightly - or in a major sense - differently than one and other.
From a micro to macro scale, beauty does in fact, if nothing more, seem to be a temporary thing. No form of beauty ever seems to stand up to the ultimate test of time. Even if it could, human physiology is always changing, especially our brains, as we evolve. The way we perceive the same art in the future will likely differ to an extreme.
Our art today will be the cave paintings of tomorrow! Also, the duck was awesome. He should be a dire, red eyed, fire breathing duck, next time, though!
