Reviews for "Progenitor"

It's ok for a first.

Well this is good for a first submission. The only thing is that it is way too much repetitive. One thing that i think is crucial though, don't make all your instruments play the same melody. Have the bassline play one thing and then have the strings play something different. Then have the guitar play something else. It's ok/good to have some instruments play a few of the same notes at the same time, like they just connected and then go back their seperate ways.

I think that you should make your tracks a little shorter too, because you are new to this and i think that you should concentrate on creating a song instead of working on the song's lenght.

The ending is pretty weird, with the "crash" because there are no crash sounds anywhere else in the song you know you can put some like at every 8 or 16 bar or more frequently if you wish.

A little drum variation could be good, like you have your main pattern and then at the 4th bar put in some extra snares and hi hats just to keep things interesting.

But for what it is, a first song, it's pretty ok. You used alot of samples and you didn't just threw things randomly.

So keep at it, you will get much better with time and practice.

G9 responds:

Thanks man... the song is very repetitive, and I do agree with your point of the bassline playing different from the other tracks... the ending was kind of abrupt/weird, but I didn't know how else to end it. :P Thanks for the tips, I'll apply them to my next song.

Thanks,
G9

A good start

Well, its a lot better than most peoples first tracks, and definitely better than my first track. I mean, your progressions and riffs are fine. Maybe the track is a bit robotic though, kind of like 'this plays for 4 bars, then put across another loop for 4 bars, and so on'. Perhaps work on making some snappier riffs instead of the very dense, continuous ones. The plucked kind of bass that comes in after the beat is introduced is one example. It's not really giving any life to the track. Just continuous eighth notes. Its hard to do, but its worth the trouble to try and make memorable riffs. Just mess around in the piano roll, it doesn't come by magic!

Also, the beats. You'll thank me when you start running your kick and snare through some effects, maybe some light distortion or waveshaper. That will instantly make your groove tighter and punchier. Don't be afraid to chuck some factory drumloops over your tracks, even the pros do it, and its a real time saver!

Keep going, you're doing well so far.

G9 responds:

Thanks man... yes, the track is very organized... perhaps too organized, in the air you're running this review at. It was pretty much all layer composition, if you know what I mean.

I'm not sure how to do those effects... I've purchased a book, and I'll be running through it this year. I'll definitely give it a try in the future.

Thanks for the review!

hmmmmmmm.....

its not bad g9. i think you're let down by your choice of vst's, the instruments sound very generic. the actual progressin isnt that bad and as a tune its pretty cool. reminds me of school strangely. the inspiration here is obviously LJC which is no bad thing.

yea its the use of gneric samples really that detracts, the melodies and rhythms are okay in themselves, that bass is obnoxious if you get what i mean. I find when using FL it's best kept for your beat nly, i use cubase you see and reiwre it through. go to www.kvraudio.com you'll find some great plugins that are free also have a search for crystal, it's a synth by greenwood or oakwood cant quite remember.

now to be fair i can't five you, it's really a 2.5 but i'll 3 you.

go give me some reviews please mate. and keep banging em out you can only get better.

G9 responds:

Yeah... I was just starting out, so I went with Producer Edition, or the $150 version. No Sytrus... pretty much no extras. As I progress, I will add on the extra features. But I'm moving off to the Mac platform, so who knows? If only FL Studios was available for the Mac (yeah, boot camp's an option but come on... to reboot every time I want to use one program would be a pain the ass).

Thanks for the review man... I'll be sure to review all of your tracks that I've listened to via the podcast. Thanks for the line!

GRRRRR

GRRRRRR....GRAAARH! I wrote you this fine long review and F*CKING Newgrounds don't work very well in Firefox so it screwed it all up when i was about to submit it. I thought i had copied the text to my clipboard but all i had was this:

I got scared initially scanning this that you thought the track sucked.
