But I have a question.. Why did the guy shoot himself in the end? I mean being the last man on earth would be too much. I wouldn't survive without people. I'm a very social person so I would go insane after about 1 week of solitude.

Incidentally there was a live action black and white movie from the 50's or something called "The Last Man on Earth," based on the book "I am Legend." So people are even less justified in misunderstanding the title.
