Reviews for "Cthulhu Surfaces"

Another really cool piece :D I love that experimental touch - very courageous to try something like that in a contest - but you did really fine! The arpeggio violins, picciato, tremolo action and solo violin combined with the solo legato clarinet really was fun to listen to! I also like that you did lots of changes in feel. Even if lots of people dont like much changes i really love them because they make listening to an adventure. Dont know if classical is the right genre.

I have been well entertained. 5/5 from me :D

headphoamz responds:

Thanks SC! Yeah, this has a very "cinematic" feel to it; I based the instruments on a standard orchestra, so I went with classical, but I'd like to think this song tells a story. :)

Sweet cuppin' cakes--this is like thirty pounds of Awesome in a five pound bag! I mean R'lyeh. I can see why you chose Classical as the genre, but it's also intensely Cinematic, so I totally get what SoundChris is saying too. I particular enjoyed the creepy use of pizzicato during the deeply rumbling beginning and ending. Lots of really fun things are going on with the percussion throughout the entire orchestration, and the overall composition quality fairly blows me away. So many interwoven instruments and melodies...

Long story short, this is nothing short of astounding. What Chris said.

headphoamz responds:

Aw shucks Chrono - you're the best. Also, SWEET CUPPIN' CAKES, would that happen to be a Strong Bad reference? <3

Hey, 'Phoamz! This...is astonishing!
I really enjoyed the composition for its dynamic shifts. It keeps one such as myself interested and expectant throughout. One minute it was suspenseful, then chaotic, then triumphant, and then back to a suspenseful, hidden feeling towards the end. A truly exciting sequence!
The introduction has a classic menacing feel that combines very nicely with that background bass-filled rumbling which indeed represents an eerie advance or, as your track title implies, a fearful surfacing.
The intensification at 0:46 struck me as the revealing of Cthulhu, and it was powerfully orchestrated. I can imagine the hideous entity that ol' Cthulhu is roaring about to music like this!
The pounding percussive elements also added to the sense of panic, the 'impossible size' of a classic monster and generally accompanied the whole 'Argh!' factor of that part very well. It really does sound like a part for an encounter/confrontation with a gigantic beast.
There isn't much else I can say on this piece, simply because I find it harder to break down music like this, with all its different changes in emotion and feel.
What I will say is that the track you set out to create conquers the theme of an underwater terror. This track IS Cthulhu. I've noticed your name around the audio portal before, but this one has made me a fan. Keep it up and the best of luck in Round 2!
5/5

headphoamz responds:

Hey there! Thanks very much for such an extensive review and taking the time to listen. Nice to meet you, and glad you've come aboard for the ride! Haha.
So glad you liked 0:46! It was the hardest part of the song to mix, no doubt. I went over it about fifty times! :D
In the beginning, I started using the arpeggios and was struck with that underwater idea, where something comes out of the deep. So that was really the end goal, as well. Again, thanks, and very happy you enjoyed, PotentApogee! :)

Enjoyed your piece - its very versatile and fun to listen to :D I especially like the first part with the arpeggio violins - very dark feel. Keep it on!

headphoamz responds:

Thank you so much :D

aaaaaand the number one of the NGADM is....... Headphoamz! CONGRATULATIONS!
No .... im dead serious. This is way too good. I really enjoyed it! 0:46 O ... M ... G dat change. That could really be in a James Bond film or so. Great work! At 1:26, i love those percussion sounds. What samples did you use?
Best work you've made so far. Seriously!

headphoamz responds:

Aw shucks Ralaly, thank you! Means a lot. I used Stormdrum 2's Metal Objects, Earthquake Ensemble, and The Beast. :3
