Reviews for "Cthulhu Surfaces"

It's powerful and envocative. I would honestly like to see more ocean themed music from you, as I'm curious about the different ways by which you would try to capture the unrelenting power and the titanic endlessness of the sea.

headphoamz responds:

Thank you Nazarak! I love the ocean and fear it at the same time. I'd like to go for a warmer, calmer piece next time, maybe when the waters are still. :)

epicness! your colour choices and voicings are astounding, and I love the flow of your structure. I mucked up the structuring in my piece, so I'm a little jealous lol. anyway, good luck in the results!

headphoamz responds:

Ha! Like I just said with steampianist, the "color choices" comment makes me the happiest. Colors just happen for me when I write - is it the same way with you? It's called synaesthesia. Very interesting stuff.

finally a striking cinematic piece

i love that playful part in 1:26 it made me smile
you literally painted a picture with sounds, a picture of rising from the depths.
your harmonies are wonderful and the way different key changes progressed was smooth and flawless. (i dont think it was that sudden)

and the ending was rather interesting to me it showed/portrayed the wreckage that cthulu left.
anyways i loved it 5 stars and good luck in round 2

headphoamz responds:

Steam! Oh man, it's great to see a review from you. Your latest piece for NGADM is something I've been listening to on repeat all weekend. Really a magical and original piece!
I love how you said "painted a picture" - one of the highest compliments. I see colors when I listen to or write music, and I tried to incorporate that into my musical palette when composing this one.
Really value your opinion, thank you :)

I love the instruments and mood. The intensity was huge! :D Sometimes, however ( :46,1:27, 1:38, etc.) I felt like it transitioned between moods a little too suddenly, and the structure was a little confusing, like you tried to squeeze a 15-minute long orchestral piece into 3 1/2 minutes. That said, I do especially like several of the isolated parts, including :46, 1:52, and 2:23. You definitely have a wide variety of emotions in here: sadness, apprehension, exhilaration, etc. An excellent track overall, though. I find myself craving a second movement! :3 Good luck at NGADM! ;)

headphoamz responds:

Oh thank ya! There are definitely several flavors to the piece, for sure. I wanted to make it longer! But the mix was just too time-consuming to go another day. Glad you enjoyed it; perhaps in the future Cthulhu will return! :)

You've really pulled it out of the bag for me. It's reminiscent of so many different things for me, feeling-wise in each of the different parts! I just love 2:10-2:20 and the eerie turn it takes. This could be shot straight into a movie IMO. You're probably my favourite composer on Newgrounds, simply because you really push the boundaries. You're not afraid to experiment and take risks and they *always* seem to pay off. 5 stars out of 5!

headphoamz responds:

D'aww, thanks EW! Appreciate the feedback here. I'm happy you thought 2:10 was eerie as well. That's what I was going for!
