wow great game and fun to play!

I've had sometime in my day to go through my NG account; after going through this game again I was not disappointed in my choice for revisiting it. It took sometime to go through all the platforming about 40mins or so, and I even found a secret room! Anyway, this review is honestly mostly for NG.

Do you enjoy depth? How about something simple? Do you have an hour or so to spare?

-Non Spoily review-

Redder is a very simple/casual game with a very missable esoteric and really a bit pretentious idea to it. Which I won't tell you in this part of the review though. Trust me I'm doing you a favor.

Do you enjoy platforming in its' most pure simple form a la super mario franchise? Redder's primary gameplay is that. You run, jump, avoid things and hit switches that's all there is to it. The secondary gameplay to Redder is exploration and collection. The world on which you find yourself is quite expansive and offers some bits of interesting diversity in terms of looks along with certain areas focusing more on puzzles or avoiding death. Some of these areas offer stronger challenges than others but every area has you pretty doing the same thing, collecting gems, that's it! Dying is more of an annoyance as you have unlimited lives and time to find every gem in the game. Nothing complicated no sarcasim here!

Story wise, there's not a lot of narrative. You are an astronaut of some sorts. Your spaceship's primary fuel source (gems) have run out. This strange barren planet you have landed on contains just enough gems for you to refuel your ship and leave it's orbit back into space. There are no other sentient creatures to meet just killer robots, deadly projectiles and nasty green electricity.

The lack of any actual story makes (for myself atleast) the world feel more alive. Instead of every new area needing someone to state "why did someone make this? How? What happened to them?" Ect, each new place I find has me investing some time of my own to make conclusions as to why this place is here. This may seem lazy but in all honesty this is a really good thing! Sometimes less is more and in this case less is more is even better and is executed very well!

Graphics wise, let me just state that the glitches are not glitches they are a feature. Collect all the gems and read the spoiler warning part and trust me you will not be dissapointed.

Anyway back to the presentation!

Naturally Redder looks the way it looks because of it's setting. The pallet of Redder is a very subdued and simple color scheme, Red, brown, some metal stuff and some green. It looks like a very alien barren desert planet. All of this is represented in an old school 16bit scheme. No smooth lines just sprites and very simple animation. This combines very well with it's very few simple and ambient sound tracks.

All together, Redder plays, looks, sounds and feels like a very old school game someone took away from the 80s era. Honestly to really enjoy it and understand it I feel that it would be mandatory for you to collect every gem, as the bare minimum ending leaves the player in too much mystery. Play through this game entirely! If you really enjoy old school games or just have an hour or so please do yourself a favor and play a full run through of this game!

My recommendations
Half assed 3/5
Full Run 4/5 (A 5 if the meaning was a little more clear)

First off let me just state,

If you are still reading this and haven't beaten the game blind run/ full run, you are making a huge mistake. This is quite a unique game experience. I really mean that. When you are 100% done with the game and with this review you will find a very simple meaningful and relatable concept at the end of all of this. If you have beaten the game awesome! Let me finally explain what I found about this game.

Why do we play any game? Hell why do we do anything? Easy answer, because as humans we like to give things beyond our basic needs more meaning than they really need. Redder does this at the end by showing us in a weird reverse fashion that at the end of this game all we are really doing is just moving hit box around avoiding things and jumping on things to get to a "THE END" screen.

When I first played this all I really thought was that the whole glitches were a neat thing to look at. Now, the glitches were more or less an incentive a mystery really, that in order to solve required more gems to collect.

If you had taken this game and replaced the environment with a castle, the astronaut with a knight, you would have the same thing. In the end it's just a hitbox moving around that we as humans decided to care about and see to the end of it's journey.
