Reviews for "ImmorTall"

Try going back after getting shot at.

It seems no one's thought of this yet.

And yeah, great and depressing, I have nothing else to say that hasn't been said.

Dark, Heart wrenching beauty.

This truly is a wonderful submission. I recall playing it for the first time, and being left with a heavy heart after forcing ImmorTall to die for the purpose of saving the family. Although, as many have alluded to in comments, this is not a game in the traditional sense, I am still going to hit up my talking points in reviewing it.

*****NOTE*****
My review contains spoilers; I highly recommend playing the game and getting a sense of its meaning before you let me affect your perception.

1) Plot
Is there one? We don't know the history of either the alien or the family, nor the land in which their fates crossed. I, for one, think that instead of detracting to the game, it adds to it. We see through the eyes of the silent alien, thrust into a confusing quagmire of confusion, fear, violence, hate, and love. Although the plot is as simplified as it can be, it serves its purpose nothing short of phenomenal.

2) Characters
This category is similar to the plot in that we are not dealing with the traditional sense of game. There is no dialogue, yet this does not impede us from seeing how profoundly deep these silent figures are. The girl, whom we meet first, is curious, adventurous, naive, and above all, loving. Her brother, on the other hand, is a bit reckless, as shown by his immediately jumping onto the back of an unknown alien, but his heart is gold; the first thing he does is feed ImmorTall. When the adults come into the picture, we are first introduced to emotions other than curiosity and admiration: the father points at the extraterrestrial, and dashes into the house, wife at his heels. But the protective father eventually trusts the alien after his wife tentatively gives him some sort of bottle, which he eats.

ImmorTall, our alien, shows no emotion. Perhaps, as he is from another world, they do not exist for him. This view makes the game even more tragic; human emotions and intentions must utterly baffle the poor being. First he is loved and admired, then he is being hit with a rain of bullets and bombs. We can see what is happening, but in know way does our protagonist have any way of making sense of it all.

3) Gameplay
The extremely simple 2 button control matches the brevity of the game itself. It is very easy, in essence, to block enemy fire.

4) Layout
As this is an experimental sidescroller, there are no items to collect, no coins to find, no weapons to upgrade, thus, a layout is not necessary.

5) Weapons and Items
The only weapons in the game are used against you by faceless soldiers. This is certainly a submission that does not view them in a good light. As the player never uses one, I have no need to review them.

6) Graphics
No real comments or concerns, just they work well with the mood, and the artist obviously is no shrug at flash. Good work here.

7) Music
The clunky, dissident guitar chords parallel the mood of the game perfectly; an endless, dark plodding, with foreboding tainting every note. It makes the mood even more uncomfortable, and sometimes clashes with the mood of the characters in the beginning of the game (girl picking up ImmorTall, or brother tossing him an apple). However, I dont think that this subtracts from the game, in fact, the underlying, depressing music is an effective tool to show that nothing good can come out of the aliens situation. I'm glad the artist included a mute option, however.

This pretty much wraps up my review of this wonderful work of art. I would like to close with a short bit on the possible endings. I'm not going to go through them all, just tell the reader my personal favorite.

When the army first begins to fire upon the alien, I found the best thing to do is just turn around and walk back to your spaceship. The family follows behind, and as you blast off, away from the horrible place that is Earth, they are visibly devastated. After the parents walk back to the house, the girl and her brother stay, weeping at your leaving. But you have to realize that leaving the hostile world behind was really the only decent thing you could have done. Im out of characters

Nice game. Bad ending.

This game it´s incredible! Some times looks like the music it´s sync with the movements and the shoots. The gameplay it´s so cool, it´s not so hard, but not easy.
In fact, i loved this game.

I saved all of them, and i died in the end

And all i can hope is that they are safe in the end.

I regret nothing :)
