After nearly five hours, too many deaths to count, and innumerable attempts, I've finally beaten this game.
I haven't attempted beating Primary in years after becoming unmotivated, but today I decided to come back and try it once again, and I felt very, very satisfied upon beating it.
There were a lot of aspects I enjoyed about this game, and ones that drew me in when I was a kid. I really liked how each color had its own powers and was needed to get past specific obstacles, encouraging using colors in tandem. The portal and iceblock upgrades were fun and made for some interesting puzzles. The fireboost one was also cool, but a little tricky to get the hang of.
The levels are all very diverse, and the first few ease new players into the game very well. The boss fights are somewhat easy given its attack patterns, but I still found them entertaining.
However, I found some levels to be...questionable in design. The first 14 levels are manageable, but from level 15 onwards, I found myself running into sections or puzzles that often required pixel/frame perfect movements to get across, and other sections I felt were too gimmicky, such as the treadmill section in level 25 or the rather egregious wall jump section from level 27. While players can get by these with enough trial and error, I think the later levels rely TOO much on trial and error, if that makes sense. Or maybe I just suck lol.
All in all, Primary isn't perfect, but it's still a very fun and interesting game, and I'd recommend it to anyone who enjoys platformers and puzzle games. Really glad this game was a part of my childhood.
