I saw this animation awhile back and had no clue what was going on. I finally got to see the movie myself and I really was disappointed. I loved all of the explosions, but the drama was too much.
This summed it up pretty well. I think the movie would have been better with more explosions, less "accidental" drama, and even less emotional "we are going to die" drama. Then again, I'm big on the supernovas with those circular rings that explode around them.
