This is clearly a top-down take on MechWarrior 2, and that's just fine. That was a great game, and it totally blew my mind back in 1995. This game, having a similar storyline, soundtrack, customization feature, and ranking system, is, therefore, good.
What is not good is the mode of the gameplay itself. Mechs play best in wide open spaces, as do swarming survival games like this one. Playing in such a cramped space was a bad design choice. Larger maps with fewer physical obstacles would have worked better. Also, one truly thrilling aspect about the MechWarrior games is that they made you feel like you were hunting or being hunted. This game lacked that element, as all the enemies were easily visible, even if they were hidden behind an obstacle, and all enemies charge you en masse. They may as well be zombies and you a guy with a shotgun, rather than mechs and mechs. More obscurity in the play area, along with more tactical enemy AI would have made for a much more immersive experience.
All in all, this is the epitome of game craft, but a case of bad judgment in the design of individual levels.
Final judgment: This game is better than average. In fact, it is better than most, but not something I would play again after I've finished it.
