A Blobs Tale Review

The first thing I noticed were the graphics, they are boring. On every level the ground was a depressing shade of gray and everything else was a dumbed down shade of what should be a brighter color. There was no variation in the color scheme when the levels changed, and that didn't help. The animation and characters were simplistic but I thought it neither bettered or crippled the game. However, when I play a fantasy/adventure game I want to be amazed by the scenery. In a fantasy game, the environment should look good, with lots of detail and more creatures to look at.

The first puzzle was awful, anyone who has the brain power of an average human being will not recognize that colored flowers placed by a cliff symbolize an order in which you are supposed to jump on platforms. Nearly everyone will just see it as a piece of scenery. The weird rock monster thing that gave you hints also looked boring and unimaginative and should have been replaced by a sign with a clue that the player would have to solve(this would have helped with the puzzle element of the game). The only puzzle I really enjoyed was the runestone puzzle but its not original at all, some originality would be nice. I have to admit the "flower + wife = shovel" blurb though, it was fun playing through that segment and it's sad that something like that never happened again.

The soundtrack was also boring, one piano melody repeating over and over is not enjoyable, I'm sorry. As far as I can tell the music didn't change with boss battles either. You would think there would be a frantic song to accompany a frantic level or boss, but no, just the same boring piano melody repeating over and over. The main character walking sound effect was completely unfitting (does he have hooves?), I think a softer sound would accompany the protagonists design much better. Besides that there was almost no sound at all, and that is also disappointing. Did I mention the one piano melody repeating over and over?

The programming served its purpose, it was also simplistic but the swimming and snowboarding controls were a nice touch. Although that doesn't mean the snowboarding level sucked, because it did. By far the worst part of the game was the snowboarding level. There were no instructions when you first start so I didn't realize the trees were supposed to be avoided (they looked exactly like a piece of scenery, just like the flowers), I must have died three times before I realized what was going on. Once I caught on I found that I could bounce of the top of the trees, this led to an aggravating amount of confusion and me repeatedly saying "What the fuck?" to my monitor. This level alone brought my lives from 17 to 6.

You may complain because I only listed the negatives, but I did this because I honestly can't think of any positives. That's not to say it was a terrible game, but it wasn't a good game either. I think you should know though that I didn't feel like I accomplished anything by beating this game. Probably because it wasn't a full game it was more like half a game, well at least you'll have time to improved on the second chapter. If I had to describe this game in one word that word would be "meh".

5/10 for the effort.

There is my overly long review, it was intended for the authors to read so I don't care if anyone else reads it. ~ Peace

Meh

I can't use the boomerang. Game is a no go on that count. Otherwise, it was a bit boring, but the boomerang is the only real problem.

Sorry

sorry, i just found alot of glitches. And I couldnt get past the lava. Also it got kinda boring fast. But over all its pretty good

I'm one of THOSE people...

Yep, one of the people who can't use the boomerang. Intel Mac OS X Safari.

So I guess I'll have to review it based on what comes before that part. There are a bunch of issues with the controls and platforms. For example, sometimes I can't jump, and I keep falling off of platforms when I shouldn't. I don't like the idea of having 20 lives for the whole game, either, mainly because of the issues with staying on platforms. It seems like the type of game where you should just keep going until you reach the end. Plus, there's no way a first time player won't lose a couple lives in places like the first few platforms, which by the way gave me a wrong idea of what the game would be like. I don't see any new concepts introduced here so far. There's no reason to come to this game first if I want to play a few platformers, since other games have done everything and many have done things in better ways.

I like the general style of the game, though. I think if some of the problems were fixed, it could be a decent puzzle platformer. It seems like a style I would use if I made games. Let me know when the game's updated and I'll check it out.

Did you notice what happens when you pull a lever and a rock is on the spot where the platform rises? Might wanna fix that. Also, make the character walk slightly faster. And give us a funny hat option so I can point and laugh. "HAW! Lookit 'is hat!" :P
