Reviews for "Vector Siege TD"

Below average

This is a good draft for a tower defense game. This is a good draft for a tower defense game. It has enemies that move across a predestined path with the only intent of making it to the other side. It gives you the ability to put towers on the sides of the path to stop the enemies. So far so good... It gives you the opportunity to upgrade certain towers, a little more extra, but expected. This game has a multilevel selection, but you have to unlock them, that's ok. Here are some problems I have with this game:

-- I don't see a spot that stats my tech level, I think that would help because you need a certain tech level to make some towers.

-- When I look at tower description, some of them run into my score, making it harder to read.

-- There is no save feature, a feature I would like to see in every game, no matter how redundant.

-- I would like a music selection, but you can mute the music so it isn't a priority.

-- This game lacks originality, the enemies are shapes, giving you that "draft" feel, the sound affects, need work, at best they sound cheesy, and the enemies disappear on contact with tower projectiles, I would like to see an explosion or something.

-- tower placement as open as it is (in most cases this would be a good thing) needs fixed or improved. In a tower defense game I would prefer a slot to place a tower, and if it is manageable a highlighted slot where you would wish to place the tower. In this game, you get a square and a grid, you can place it ANYWHERE on the grid (which is normally cool) as long as it doesn't conflict with another tower. Unless your good at placement, it feels very unorganized.

-- I didn't unlock all the towers and use them all, but the affects I did see from the special towers I used did not impress me. For example, if I'm using a slow time tower, I want a ball with a distorted blobby ball affect, with a whammy noise from a guitar or something, anything that would distinguish it, from an average shot from an average tower.

-- I haven't played many tower games with bosses in them, you might want to add some or take them into consideration.

That said, here is what I liked about this game:

-- The game is somewhat easy to use and understand, but could be better through organization.

-- I like the fact you took into consideration that people would need an instructions menu or list. You should make it easier to read using spaces and/ or possibly make a tutorial, that would show effort in making your game.

-- Without going out of my way I have found no glitches in the game, always a plus.

-- I like the way you make different enemies move at different speeds and with different health amounts on different waves.

-- I like that you can start a wave before your current wave is done, you should allow the player to start as many waves as desired though, instead of making them wait a certain amount of time. This would speed up game play.

-- Thank you for making a pause button, it really makes things easier, especially when you're busy or you get called to do something or if you simply just need a break.

-- I also like that you made the music mutable, just thought I should mention it again.

-- The interest at the beginning of every level is smart, but it should increase (or decrease) upon wave and level, also you should have a wave select.

Overall, a good draft, don't expect it to be called the greatest thing ever, it's just about average. Nice job.

Archbob responds:

There no need for a tech level. The towers that aren't unlocked have a slash through them so it should be obvious which ones you can and can't build.

And the game auto-saves after every level -- so the save thing is already there

its ok

one bug I found was your sell prices don't match the actual amount you get back.

Gameplay: Mediocre TD atmosphere with little motivation. (1)
Graphics: Simple background with good turret design art. Enemies look bland. (3)
Sounds: Science fiction-esque BGM with minimum SFX. (3)
Controls: Entirely mouse-based with no hotkeys. (4)
Interface: No menu, but has options to mute and pause. (3)
OVERALL: 3 stars

NOTES:
- Levels' difficulty progression not balanced (drastic change).
- Strong resemblance to Vectors TD, first published in Candystand from '07.
- Not every gamer is experienced with TD games. Include a quick tutorial for upgrades and such.
- Indicate which entrance/exit the goal is.
- Font size for "Score: #" in victory page is uneven with the rest.

I've seen better

But then again, I've seen much worse. It works, but it gets boring easily and quickly. Maybe you could add a few jokes along with some real enemies and backgrounds. The only bug I found was the anti-cheat system. It makes you lose, but it unlocks the next level in the process.
Basically this is a good concept, but artistically and variety-wise it could be improved, with the only major irritant being the tower descriptions that are difficult to read in some cases. An opaque bachground for their windows should do the trick
