Reviews for "Pico Epsilon"

Awesome

really awesome video

Eh... great, but not quite top marks. 4/5... just.

Uh, well, for the art alone it probably deserves a three, in the same way that if you write a good school short story you're probably going to get a solid B grade for it. It even grabs the 4 for having some truly... good, (I'm saying good about a Pico film!) elements. But I can't say there's anything exceptional about it storywise, and graphics and action alone aren't going to make up for a weak story even with a few moments of random gun-toting and even with a guy getting thrown into a nuke, only to watch the heroes die anyway in the nuclear blast!... Nonetheless this is the best thing I've actually seen come out of 3D Pico and by far the closest thing I've seen to a successful attempt to create a serious 3D Pico story. The story of Pico is something languishing in lost potential (I do wish that someone wanting to do a serious Pico story would just go back to the original story of Pico and write "Pico's school" in a serious flash film format, make it 3D, and run from there.)

I'll probably be crucified for this and get labelled with hundreds of "useless review" labels for what I'm going to say, but I'm not a huge fan of Pico... and yes, I know, then why the hell am I watching a Pico movie... but nonetheless, I keep hoping that something truly good and unique will come out of the series with a decent storyline and no jokes about jerking off, uberkids and other random cliques or comments about Nene being a slut... *hint hint* either that or I'd like to see a hilarious parody that takes the living mick out of everything about Pico. So far all I keep seeing (outside Pico games, which are a substantial step up on their movie cousins) is something that seems like its trying hard to make a serious story evolution, but somehow ends up falling flat on its face trying every time, with this coming closest to success but just missing the 5 star mark for missing some crucial points.

summary

The story starts, predictably, with Pico on the rooftops about to kill himself. Memories float back to the traumatic school incident as it becomes clear how scarred Pico is over the incident. So far, alright. Nene and Darnell enter the story, again, ok, except for the fact that Darnell seems to be an over-muscled brute who looks nothing like the person in the original story. (there was no reason to make him beefed up like that!)

Following the suicide note (Which seemed a tad unreal, do you think that Pico would write about "jerking off" in his final letter?!") an explosion goes off chopping through the building Nene and Darnell are in. Darnell is killed off by sniper (removing the huge potential for a long drawn out fight between Darnell and Nene and the Uberkids... more to say on them later.) Nene is knocked against a wall, and instead of doing what she should've been doing, (knifing people) she gets knocked out of action. Pico then turns up and kicks one of the enemies out of the window (uberkids, seriously?) before turning round and watching Nene get shot to pieces (missing out opportunity for long dramatic tense moment/Pico accidentally shooting his friend in the head.) Enemies have by this time called a nuke in (obviously throwing minimum use of force to the winds) and Pico proceeds to fire at it, apparently destroying it. (Nope, not that lucky.) He then goes dragon-balls up (which is when I stopped hoping for an original and well constructed story) and turns the two remaining enemies into chop-suey, throwing one into the nuke, which still continues (being very persistent as nukes tend to be) as Pico goes emo and lets the rest of the town die as he feels sorry for himself (before dying himself.) Its solid I suppose, not epic.
Overall I give this the "brave attempt" badge. Its good for a single movie, gives some sense of the characters, but it's just too storyline lacking to get a 5. With some more work and a lot of thought, Pico can get a 5/5 from me, and this is still good work, despite all my criticism of potential gone unfulfilled I'm begrudgingly giving this a 4... which means competent with some very good or original parts.

BiffTheTimid responds:

Thanks for the long thought out review. As I've said before, it is what it is. I wanted to take the classic Pico and make it serious without completely getting rid of what makes Pico Pico. I knew I'd get some flack for the DBZ references (I honestly didn't think so many people would care about the over-9000 joke), but I thought it'd be fun to animate, and I really only had a good month's time of animating when all was said and done, and only 4 minutes of song to work with. I wanted the action to center around Pico, so that's why the other characters were killed off. Glad you enjoyed it, even if it didn't completely live up to your standards.

Stiffy

The Characters and animation was all so stiff. I couldn't bare it!
Please work on this. People don't usually stand so straight; as for the animation... well, it all seemed the same...

You are the best reviewer in the history of reviewers. How can I leave reviews as eloquently put, and full of insight and wit as you? Teach me.
