Reviews for "Don't Look Back"

Cool

not the best but i like it

You ROCK!

Nice work with the game.
The guy who talked about mythology, he couldn't look back for her until he reaches the World again. Something happened and he looked back, so his wife vanishes. He was so sad, that he played his flute (or something like that) inverse. He waked a tribe of amazons that killed him after all this Novel.

The game should be closer to the Myth, in the way he could make cerberus sleep with his Flute, and he should Negotiate with Hades... Anyway... it worth a 5/5 and a 10/10!

You rock!

A Good First Shot

While a lot of reviewers criticize the low-end graphics, I thought it had both a retro appeal and a subtle sense of minimalism. Super realistic graphics does not necessarily equal a better product, so I was happy with the product. Actually, the retro-graphics did trigger a nostalgia reflex, which is always good for a game.

The difficulty is mitigated by the fact that you have infinite retries of a given scene. The simple platforming is also enhanced by the fact that the game draws on Greek mythology as its influence. And the circular nature of returning from where you started was very nice. The twist ending was nice, and made for a seamless loop of the gameplay.

I agree with some reviews that more ambient music would improve the game, but silence also goes hand-in-hand with the sense of minimalism you've got going, so I suppose it isn't a complete necessity.

Very good work. I hope to see more of your work in the future.

Stunning

I can't think of any bad things about this game. It all works very nicely. From the gameplay, to the story, to the peripherals.

The storyline itself works itself neatly into the game. You aren't given any dialog that would upset the flow or have to spend 5 mins reading the story of a game that you finish in 2. Personally I am more familiar with the Japanese version of this myth, which also works in this game.

The gameplay was difficult, but not painfully. Although I did get stuck dieing on the same screen a few times, they could eventually be overcome. You can die easily, but since you don't go far back. The difficulty is a nice blend of hard, but not punishing.

The music was well placed. Having music all the way through would upset the lonely feel of the game. But it came in to spice things up to fight bosses. The look of the game gave it a nice link as an old school fable from the commodore 64 era. Also, the length of the game was also just right. It finished before things became too stale, but long enough to be able to enjoy it.

Finally, the ending of the game worked so well. It made me think wtf before it finished in perfect timing. Overall its close to being a master piece. Most people are polorised by it, which simply means its not pandering to EVERYONE, which is done way too often. It gets 10/10 since I can't think of anything I didn't like about it.

WHAT?!?!?!

Since I'm under the strict guidelines of not acting like a total asshole I won't write what I am thinking of in my head, and because of me giving you a low score I am to offer constructive critisism. The graphics was nil, the arrow keys were annoying and I thought that it was too wasteful of a game to finish playing. I'm sorry if you find this offensive, I don't mean to sound like a bitch.
And to all who wonder if this is a reference to Greek mythology: YES. The author is referring to when Orpheus went into Underworld to take back his deceased wife, Eurydice. After persuading Charon, the one who managed the boat that crossed the River Styx, and after charming Cerberus, the three-headed dog who guards the gates, Orpheus then debated with the Lord of the Dead, Hades, to let him take back Eurydice. Hades agreed, but only if he would never look back to his wife, not even so much as a glance.
Orpheus did so and he was almost to the surface when he disobeyed and look back to Eurydice. His and Hades deal being broken her spirit went back with the souls of the dead. He ventured back to the land of the living, alone and in shame.
Oh, and FYI, I did this all without looking in any books or on the internet.
