Reviews for "Exploit"

very satisfying with few flaws

I'll begin with the one flaw that come to mind. First, the puzzle elements appeared off-center within the grid lines; horizontal connection lines did not run along grid lines unlike the vertical connection lines, and other puzzle elements touched the tops of the grid squares.

The designer took a risk by setting the story within the real world context of Terrorism and Guantanamo Bay (though the second location is called Camp Zulu it bears all the same characteristics of the real world prison and GB is named as its direct predecessor). Because different players can disagree strongly about these real world elements, anyone who'd use them as part of their art risks players' politics coloring their experience of their game. If the game is intended a political statement, that's fine, but if the real world elements are included only to establish a sense of drama then its possible to alienate people who'd otherwise enjoy your game.

Fortunately I was thoroughly captivated by the storyline, though the designer and I may have some disagreements about his subject matter. To make a long story short, my understanding is that most prisoners at GB were brought there without genuinely being terrorists, though they may feel considerably greater ill will today after being held unjustly for years. Perhaps the designer was trying to split the difference by suggesting that the prisoners include both innocent and dangerous men. By creating an imaginary country for the villain, it was possible for me to set aside my doubts to enjoy the thrilling conclusion.

The puzzle design turned out to be quite good with several tricky solutions necessary. I was able to solve all of them but the Motor Pool puzzle in Chapter 2, for which I had to use DDOS. I didn't experiment with the puzzle editor or challenges, but I appreciate that the designer provided a way to continue enjoying the game past the story mode.

Fun and easy

After completing this whole game, I feel rather triumphant. Great puzzles/ timing challenges. Good stuff.
