surprisingly good

I'll be honest and say that my first thought about the game was something along the lines "this got awesome score? i see this kind game 10 times a day" but I'm glad I didn't quit right there. The game was actually pretty fun to play. While the dodging of falling objects has been done million times (by million noobs :P) this version had something to it that kept me playing. I think it had a lot to do with the graphics/sounds and overall atmosphere. So good job with that.

I didn't like about the unforgiving collision detecting. It irritated me a bit in the eagle level.
I also found the space shuttle level a bit hard due to the small space to move. Sometimes there was no way to avoid a hit.
And I didn't like getting hit after the object had passed me and me feet touched it. I think it would be much better if you hit test only the head area.

Thanks for the review! It's really good to see so many people enjoying my game. :)

I hear everyone's comments about the unforgiving collision and will look at changing it in sequels; adding a little bit of what I'll call a "forgiveness buffer". In regards to having just the head hittest though, I think that would make the game a bit too easy.

As an explanation, when implementing the collision, my thoughts had been that this is a game about dodging so you gotta dodge everything. Dodgeman is just a little guy, so the smallest of things can damage him ;)

Simply AWESOME!

Dodgeman has come a long way since 1999, but has kept to the great arcade style it was designed after! Fun and addicting you will want to keep playing to finish the story and get on the high score!
The author added a lot of features, ie co-op play, high score, even turning sound off, and paid a lot of attention to detail!

Great design, art and music makes this a well balanced game :) a definite 10/10 compared to some other stuff on here...

as to the 2 major complaints so far;
the collision detection (is built into flash and is a pixel by pixel detection) so beat the game and don't get hit!
and the bonus stage is harder than the rest of the game (well I think it was designed to be a sudden death, in which to determine your mad skillz, so step and take the challenge...instead of letting Throwman "spank" you :P

Keep up the good work, and original ideas!

Holmfry responds:

I'm glad you like the game, thanks! :)

Thanks for getting what I was trying to accomplish with the bonus level! :)

And you are also right about the collision detection, I used the built-in actionscript hittest function which is pixel-by-pixel, and used transparencies to ensure that collision boxes didn't exist.

Great Fun, Addicting Gameplay!

I've played this game over and over again, and must say that it is addicting. As another reviewer stated, it really is a homage to the games from the 90's. The visuals are fun and suit the style of the game to a T. While the 'story' as it were is pretty basic, the design and flow of the various levels gives a sense of progression and flow. I found myself playing the levels just to see what I would be presented with next.

The only complaint I would have with this game (and it seems to be a continuing theme) is that there is no margin for error with the getting hit. As the author has stated, this is because it is pixel by pixel detection, which can be daunting when you're used to have a safety buffer. However, once you're aware of this feature/limitation you will find that you become accustomed to it.

Despite a few faults, this game was both fun and entertaining, which is ultimately the goal of any game... 8/10. Keep up the good work!

Holmfry responds:

Thanks! I appreciate the review and the comments. I'm glad you enjoy the game! :)

The no-holds-barred pixel by pixel collision I've implemented does seem to keep coming up as a comment from a number of people and is something I will look at changing in any sequels.
